Chapter 16 - THE INSIDE MAN

The attack on the estate changed everything. The syndicate went underground. Lorenzo relocated their command center to a subterranean bunker beneath the city’s financial district—a relic from the Cold War that the Morettis had secretly retrofitted.

Evelyn’s discovery of the domestic bank accounts became their only lead. She isolated the IP addresses authorizing the transfers to the Volkovs. The data pointed to a high-rise luxury apartment in the Gold Coast. The owner was Marcus Sterling, a supposedly "clean" city alderman who had publicly praised the Moretti family’s legitimate business efforts just months prior.

"Sterling," Dante spat, cracking his knuckles. "That two-faced politician. He’s playing both sides, selling us out to the Russians for a cut of the narcotics trade."

"We can't just kill a city alderman," Evelyn cautioned, looking at Lorenzo. "If we execute him, the feds will tear our legitimate businesses apart. We have to destroy him legally. We have to expose his ties to the Bratva and let the FBI do our dirty work."

Lorenzo smiled, a cold, predatory grin. "You’re thinking like a boss, Evelyn. We won't put a bullet in his head. We’ll put a wire on his neck. Dante, grab a team. We’re going to pay Alderman Sterling a midnight visit, and we’re going to give him an offer he cannot refuse."

That night, Sterling woke up to find Lorenzo sitting in the armchair of his bedroom, spinning a silencer onto his pistol. By dawn, the Alderman had signed a full confession of his treason and agreed to set a trap for Nikolai Volkov.
