Chapter 9 - The Transfer

Total darkness engulfed the grand hall, plunging the armed men into immediate chaos.
Shouts echoed off the marble walls as Giorgio’s mercenaries blindly pointed their weapons.
Clara knew she only had a split second before the emergency generators kicked in.
She remembered exactly where Giorgio was standing and lunged forward into the dark.
She crashed into him with all her body weight, knocking the silver pistol from his grip.
Giorgio swore violently, letting go of Mia to defend himself against the unseen attacker.
Clara grabbed her daughter’s small arm and pulled her into a tight, desperate embrace.
She rolled them both under a heavy mahogany table just as the backup lights flickered on.
The hall was bathed in a dim, eerie red glow from the emergency bulbs.
Isabella stood at the top of the grand staircase, holding the shotgun.
She fired a warning blast into the ceiling, raining plaster down on Giorgio’s panicked men.
Elena emerged from the dining room, sliding Lorenzo’s dropped pistol across the floor directly to him.
Lorenzo snatched the weapon, aiming it squarely at his brother’s chest.
He commanded Giorgio’s men to drop their weapons, reminding them that they were standing in his house.
The mercenaries looked at Lorenzo, then at the terrified Giorgio, and slowly lowered their guns.
They were paid well, but they knew better than to test the wrath of the true head of the Moretti family.
Giorgio raised his hands in mock surrender, laughing bitterly.
He told Lorenzo that it was too late, because he had already sent the transfer codes to the cartel.
He claimed that if Lorenzo killed him, the cartel would hunt him and the maid down to the ends of the earth.
Lorenzo’s expression did not change as he stepped closer to his treacherous brother.
He calmly pulled a small black flash drive from his pocket and held it up to the red light.
He whispered that the codes Giorgio sent were completely fake.

The real drive had just initiated a permanent lockdown of the estate's reinforced blast doors.
Thick steel shutters suddenly slammed down over every window and door in the mansion, sealing them all inside.
