Chapter 15 - The Syndicate's Shadow

The blast shook the entire foundation of the mansion, sending ancient dust raining down from the chandeliers. Clara was thrown to the floor, the confidential file slipping from her grasp. Alarms immediately began to shriek, a deafening mechanical wail that signaled a catastrophic perimeter breach. Lorenzo was beside her in an instant, pulling her to her feet. His sorrow was instantly replaced by the lethal, calculating focus of a man born into war. Giorgio had returned.

Lorenzo dragged Clara toward the door, shoving a loaded pistol into her trembling hands. He told her that he did not care if she hated him for the rest of her life, but right now, she had to survive. He ordered her to get Mia from the east wing and take the hidden servant tunnels straight to the underground reinforced bunker. Clara did not argue. The maternal instinct to protect her child overrode her heartbreak and rage. She sprinted down the hallway, her bare feet slapping against the cold marble floors.

Outside, the storm raged as Giorgio’s heavily armed mercenaries poured through the shattered iron gates. They were wearing tactical gear and carrying automatic weapons, a private army bought with the hidden offshore accounts Giorgio had hoarded for years. Lorenzo’s loyal guards fought back fiercely, but they were vastly outnumbered. The sound of gunfire echoed through the luxurious corridors, tearing valuable paintings and ancient tapestries to shreds.

Clara burst into her suite, snatching a screaming Mia from the bed and clutching the child tightly to her chest. Isabella was already waiting in the hallway, holding a tactical flashlight and her trusty shotgun. The old housekeeper grabbed Clara’s arm, pulling her toward the hidden bookshelf panel Lorenzo had shown them a month ago. As the secret door closed behind them, plunging them into the dark, damp tunnel, Clara could hear the heavy boots of mercenaries storming the floor directly above them. They were trapped like rats in a sinking ship, and Giorgio was hunting for blood.
