Chapter 11 - The Phantom of Queens

Lorenzo Moretti sat in the deafening silence of his private office, his eyes locked on the glossy photograph resting on his mahogany desk. The silver money clip gleamed under the warm glow of his desk lamp, a damning piece of evidence that tied his own flesh and blood to the death of Clara’s husband. James Bennett had not died in a tragic construction accident. He had been murdered, and Giorgio was the architect of his demise. Lorenzo’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the desk. He had spent the last month trying to build a safe, impenetrable sanctuary for Clara and little Mia, only to discover that his family was the very reason they needed saving in the first place.
A soft knock interrupted his dark thoughts. Clara pushed the heavy mahogany door open, carrying a silver tray with espresso and fresh biscotti. She looked entirely different from the terrified maid he had first met. Dressed in a tailored emerald blouse that complemented her bright eyes, she carried herself with a newfound confidence. She had taken to her role managing the estate's finances with brilliant precision, saving the family millions in just a few weeks. Lorenzo quickly slid the confidential file into his top drawer, forcing a gentle smile as she approached the desk.

Clara set the tray down, her brow furrowing slightly as she noticed the tension in his jaw. She asked him if the offshore accounts were causing him stress, offering to run the numbers again. Lorenzo reached out, gently taking her hand. He marveled at how warm her skin felt, a stark contrast to the cold, ruthless world he inhabited. He assured her that the finances were perfect and that she was doing an incredible job. But as she smiled and turned to leave, guilt twisted like a serrated knife in Lorenzo's chest.
He could not tell her. Not yet. If Clara knew that she was living under the roof of the family responsible for her husband’s death, she would pack her bags and disappear into the night with Mia. Lorenzo could not bear the thought of losing them. The moment the office door clicked shut, Lorenzo picked up his secure phone and dialed Marco, his most trusted lieutenant. His voice was dangerously calm as he ordered Marco to quietly track down every single contractor who had worked on the Queens site two years ago. He needed to know exactly why Giorgio had James killed, and he needed to know before the ghosts of the past destroyed his future.
