Chapter 4 - The Syringe
Clara and Elena peeked through the slats of the linen closet door.
A massive man dressed entirely in black was walking deliberately toward the ICU suite.
He was not Giorgio, but a professional enforcer hired to do the dirty work.
The man pulled a pair of latex gloves from his pockets and snapped them over his hands.
Elena covered her mouth, stifling a sob as the assassin pushed open Lorenzo’s door.
Clara thought of James, her late husband, and how helpless she had felt when he died.
She refused to let another life be taken while she stood by and did nothing.
Clara grabbed a heavy iron doorstop from the floor of the closet.
She ordered Elena to get to the medical cart inside the room and prepare a shot of adrenaline.
Elena argued that an adrenaline spike could trigger a massive heart attack in Lorenzo’s weakened state.
Clara coldly replied that a heart attack gave him a better chance than a bullet to the head.
The two women slipped out of the closet and crept silently toward the open doorway.
Inside the dimly lit room, the assassin was standing over Lorenzo’s motionless body.
He pulled a large syringe filled with a thick, cloudy liquid from his coat pocket.
He leaned over, preparing to inject the lethal substance directly into Lorenzo’s IV line.
Clara sprinted across the room, raising the heavy iron doorstop high above her head.
She swung it with all the desperate strength of a mother fighting for survival.
The iron struck the assassin in the shoulder, causing him to roar in pain and drop the syringe.
He spun around and backhanded Clara across the face, sending her crashing into the medical monitors.
Alarms began to shriek as the wires were violently ripped from the machines.
The assassin drew a suppressed pistol from his waistband and aimed it directly at Clara’s chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, a pale, trembling hand reached out from the bed and clamped onto his wrist.
Lorenzo Moretti’s eyes were wide open, burning with a violent rage.
