Chapter 10 - The Sunshine

The steel shutters locked into place with a deafening boom, echoing like a prison door slamming shut.
Giorgio’s arrogant smirk finally vanished as he realized there was no escape.
Lorenzo whistled sharply, and the front doors of the panic room burst open.
A dozen heavily armed guards loyal only to Lorenzo flooded the hall, having used the secret tunnels to bypass the lockdown.
They swiftly subdued Giorgio and his remaining men, binding their wrists with heavy zip ties.
Lorenzo lowered his weapon and finally allowed himself to collapse onto a nearby sofa, completely exhausted.
Clara crawled out from under the table, holding a weeping Mia tightly against her chest.
Lorenzo motioned for them to approach, his hardened expression softening as he looked at the little girl.
He told Mia that her sunshine song was the only thing that kept him fighting through the terrible darkness.
In the days that followed, the estate returned to a profound state of peace and security.
Giorgio was quietly handed over to a rival syndicate who had long awaited revenge against him.
Lorenzo officially adopted Clara and Mia under his family's absolute protection, ensuring they would never face poverty or danger again.
Clara was given a permanent, highly paid position managing the estate's finances, while Mia was treated like the princess of the household.
They finally had the beautiful, safe life they had always dreamed of.
A month later, Lorenzo sat in his private office, reviewing a confidential background check he had ordered on Clara’s past out of pure curiosity.
He flipped to the page regarding James Bennett’s tragic construction accident in Queens.
A glossy photograph fell out of the file, showing the sabotaged scaffolding and a familiar silver money clip left at the scene.

It was the exact same money clip Giorgio carried in his jacket.
Lorenzo’s blood turned to ice as he realized James’s death had never been an accident at all.
