Chapter 16 - Siege on the Estate

The underground bunker was a cold, steel-reinforced room originally designed as a Cold War fallout shelter. Isabella locked the heavy vault door, spinning the mechanical wheel until it clicked securely into place. Mia was sobbing uncontrollably, burying her face into Clara’s neck. Clara rocked her gently, singing the sunshine song in a shaky, desperate whisper until the little girl finally exhausted herself and fell asleep on a cot.

Above them, the muffled thuds of explosions and gunfire vibrated through the concrete ceiling. Lorenzo and Marco were holding the line in the grand hall, but Clara knew they could not hold out forever against a tactical mercenary force. She paced the length of the bunker, her mind racing. She felt completely helpless, just as she had felt when the police told her James had died. But as she looked at the emergency communication terminal glowing in the corner of the bunker, her eyes narrowed. She was not just a maid anymore. She was the financial architect of the Moretti empire.

Clara rushed to the terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard. The bunker had a hardwired, untraceable connection to the estate’s main servers. She bypassed the security protocols she had helped design and accessed the global financial dashboard. Giorgio was paying these men a fortune, which meant the funds were being actively held in escrow accounts to be released upon completion of the siege. Mercenaries did not fight for loyalty; they fought for cash.

Isabella watched in stunned silence as Clara’s eyes locked onto the glowing screens, a fierce, vengeful fire burning in them. Clara tracked the routing numbers she had investigated just a day prior. She found Giorgio’s primary holding accounts in the Cayman Islands. He had liquidized nearly fifty million dollars to fund this coup. Clara did not hesitate. With a few keystrokes, she initiated a mass transfer, overriding Giorgio’s archaic security codes with the master keys Lorenzo had entrusted to her. She was about to hit Giorgio where it hurt the most.
