Chapter 19 - The Dust Settles

Dawn broke over the Moretti estate, casting a golden light through the broken windows. The storm had finally passed. Clara stood in the foyer, a single suitcase resting beside her. She had packed her things, intending to honor her decision to leave. She could not raise Mia in a world where gunfights and safe rooms were a reality, no matter how much she loved Lorenzo.
Lorenzo walked down the stairs, his arm bandaged and his face bruised. He did not look like a fearsome mafia boss; he looked like a man who had lost his entire world. He stopped a few feet away from her, his voice heavy with emotion. Lorenzo told Clara that he had spent the entire night making phone calls to the commission. He had officially surrendered all of the family’s illegal territories, casinos, and smuggling routes to the rival syndicates. The Moretti crime family was dead.

Clara stared at him in absolute shock. He was willingly walking away from billions in underworld revenue and absolute power. Lorenzo took a step closer, his eyes pleading with her. He swore that the Moretti empire would only deal in legitimate real estate and global shipping from this day forward. There would be no more blood, no more secrets, and no more violence. He dropped to his knees in front of her, holding out his hand. He begged her to stay, to help him build a legacy of light instead of darkness.
Before Clara could answer, tiny footsteps padded across the marble floor. Mia ran into the foyer, clutching her stuffed rabbit. She did not run to Clara; she ran straight to Lorenzo, throwing her little arms around his neck and kissing his bruised cheek. Mia smiled brightly and told "Papa Lorenzo" that she was glad he was safe. Clara’s heart shattered and rebuilt itself in the exact same moment. She looked at the man who had given up an empire just for a chance to be a father and a husband. Clara smiled, tears spilling over her cheeks, and let go of the suitcase handle.
