Chapter 14 - The Silver Clip

Clara did not scream. She did not cry. The shock of the revelation was so profound that it momentarily stripped her of all emotion, leaving only a freezing, paralyzing numbness. She stepped out of the shadows as Marco disappeared down the staircase, pushing the heavy oak door of Lorenzo’s office wide open. Lorenzo looked up, the color instantly draining from his face as he saw Clara standing there, trembling like a leaf in a hurricane.
Without a word, Clara walked over to his desk. She opened the top drawer, her movements robotic and precise. Lorenzo did not try to stop her. She pulled out the confidential file and opened it. The glossy photograph of the collapsed scaffolding stared back at her. The silver money clip. Her husband’s death certificate. The puzzle pieces violently snapped together, forming a picture of absolute betrayal. A shattered sob finally tore from her throat, the sound echoing agonizingly in the quiet room.

Lorenzo stood up, his voice cracking as he begged her to listen to him. He swore on his life that he had only just discovered the truth, that he had no idea Giorgio was responsible when he first brought her into his home. Clara stepped back, holding her hand up to stop him from coming any closer. She looked at the man she had begun to trust, the man she had begun to fall in love with, and saw only the shadow of the mafia empire that had destroyed her family.
She told Lorenzo in a voice laced with pure venom that his money and his protection were soaked in her husband’s blood. She declared that she was leaving tonight with Mia, and if he tried to stop her, she would fight him until her dying breath. Lorenzo’s eyes filled with tears, a rare display of raw vulnerability from the feared mob boss. He nodded slowly, accepting her hatred because he knew he deserved it. He told her he would arrange a private jet to take her anywhere in the world, completely untraceable. But as Clara turned to pack her bags, the heavy silence of the estate was violently shattered by the sound of an explosion at the front gates.
