Chapter 35 - The White Lilacs of June

Back at Vance Tower, the private rooftop garden had entered its most glorious seasonal phase as early summer brought the white lilacs into full, fragrant bloom. The high-altitude sanctuary was a lush maze of polished slate pathways, vibrant green foliage, and the sweet, delicate scent of blossoms carried softly on the warm breeze.

Marin sat on a stone bench near the glass parapet, reviewing the final architectural blueprints for the upcoming Vance Foundation scholarship program. The program was designed to fund higher education for children from underserved neighborhoods across Chicago, turning the family's historical influence into a permanent engine for opportunity.

Footsteps echoed softly against the slate tiles behind her, and Dorian appeared, carrying two cups of iced herbal tea. He handed one to Marin before sitting down beside her, his arm resting naturally along the back of the bench.

"You're working late again, Commander," Dorian murmured, a warm, teasing light in his dark eyes. "The foundation board doesn't meet until Thursday. Even the most rigorous COO deserves an afternoon off in the garden."

Marin smiled, closing the blueprint folder and turning to face him. She took a sip of the cool tea before resting her hand over his. "I'm not working, Dorian. I'm just dreaming about what else we can build. When you spend years fighting just to survive, having the luxury to plan for the future feels almost miraculous."

"It's not a miracle," Dorian corrected softly, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to her temple. "It's the result of every hard choice we made when everything was falling apart. You refused to let the dark win."

"Neither of us did," Marin replied, her dark, unblinking eyes locking onto his with absolute devotion.

Beside the bench, Titan let out a long, contented sigh, resting his massive head between his paws as the afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the entire terrace. They had built a fortress of stone and steel in the past, but now they lived in something far more powerful: an open home defined by trust, light, and enduring love.
