Chapter 19 - Shadows of the Past

While the upper floors of Vance Tower remained a sanctuary of warmth and light, the international intelligence community was still dealing with the fallout of the Syndicate of the Seven’s collapse. Following Dorian’s decision to share Vance Logistics' compliance algorithms with global maritime authorities, federal agencies had launched sweeping raids across European ports, dismantling what remained of the black-market supply chains.

On a frosty Saturday morning, Ryan Vance arrived unannounced at the penthouse, his breath pluming in white clouds as he stepped out of the private elevator. He looked tense, holding a secure encrypted tablet under his arm.

Marin and Dorian were in the kitchen preparing breakfast, the smell of freshly brewed espresso and sourdough toast filling the air.

"Sorry to drop in uninvited on a weekend," Ryan said, bypassing pleasantries as he dropped the tablet onto the kitchen island. "Especially when you're supposed to be enjoying domestic bliss. But federal liaison Miller just encrypted a priority flag from Interpol."

Dorian paused, a ceramic mug in his hand. His expression hardened instantly, the easy warmth vanishing to reveal the cold, calculating intelligence of the man who had brought down Victor Marcone. "What does Interpol want with us now? The restructuring is complete."

"It's not about the restructuring," Ryan said grimly, tapping the screen to bring up a surveillance dossier. "It's about a man named Alexei Voronin. He was the silent financial backer of the Syndicate of the Seven out of Geneva. When our compliance protocols locked his shipping routes, he lost upwards of four hundred million dollars in contraband assets overnight."

Marin stepped forward, her dark eyes narrowing as she read the digital dossier. "Voronin. The man who operated in the shadows while Marcone took the public heat."

"Exactly," Ryan nodded. "And according to federal intercepts, Voronin isn't interested in negotiating or filing lawsuits. He views our clean break as a personal insult. Intelligence places him on a private flight out of Zurich heading straight for O'Hare. He’s landing tonight."

Dorian set his mug down with a sharp, deliberate clink. The kitchen fell utterly silent, save for the crackling of the distant fireplace and the low, heavy breathing of Titan, who had trotted over from the living room to stand quietly at Dorian's side.

"Let him come," Dorian said, his voice entirely devoid of fear, carrying only an absolute, lethal calm. "For ten years, men like Voronin hid behind my family's name because they thought we were cut from the same cloth. It's time to show him what happens when a Vance finally stands in the light."
