Chapter 21 - The Morning After the Frost

By dawn, the blizzard had passed, leaving Chicago blanketed in a pristine, blinding sheet of white snow that stretched as far as the eye could see under a brilliant, cloudless winter sky. The sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting a dazzling golden brilliance across the frozen skyline.
Up in Vance Tower, the atmosphere was serene and completely untouched by the late-night confrontation at O'Hare. The federal authorities had handled Voronin’s deportation swiftly, ensuring that the last ghost of the international syndicate was permanently excised from American soil.
Marin stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse living room, holding a cup of hot chamomile tea. She watched the sunlight glitter off the snow-covered architectural marvels of downtown Chicago, a deep sense of profound lightness settling into her chest.
Dorian walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin softly on her shoulder.
"I heard the news from Ryan," Marin said softly, turning her head to look at him. "Voronin’s private jet was escorted back across the Atlantic before dawn. The federal wire reports that the Syndicate of the Seven has officially dissolved in the wake of his detention."
"It’s over," Dorian confirmed, his arms tightening around her. "Really and truly over. No more shadows, no more contingency plans for war. Just us."
Marin smiled, turning around within his embrace to face him fully. She reached up, her fingers tracing the sharp, familiar lines of his jaw—the face of a man who had fought through the darkest corners of the underworld and had chosen to walk out into the light.
"Good," Marin whispered, a playful spark dancing in her dark eyes. "Because I have a wedding to plan, and I refuse to let international crime syndicates interfere with the seating arrangements."

Dorian laughed—a rich, genuine sound that echoed warmly through the sunlit room. "The seating arrangements are entirely under your control, Commander. You outrank everyone in this building, including me."
Near the hearth, Titan let out a happy, echoing huff of agreement, resting his massive head back down as the winter sun warmed the peaceful room.
