Chapter 24 - The Vows of the Open Sky

The afternoon sun hung low over the western horizon, casting a warm, golden halo across the rooftop garden as federal liaison Miller—ordained for the afternoon by municipal decree—smiled down at the couple standing before him.

"We gather here today," Miller began, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle hum of the city far below, "not in a place of shadows or secrets, but in the open light. We celebrate two lives that were forged through trial, tested by fire, and united by an unwavering commitment to truth and each other."

Dorian looked down into Marin’s dark, unblinking eyes—eyes that had stared into terror and emerged with absolute grace.

"Marin," Dorian said, his voice low, steady, and resonant in the quiet air, cutting straight through the gentle summer breeze. "I spent the first half of my life believing that strength meant building walls, keeping secrets, and standing alone at the top of the world. You didn't just break down those walls—you taught me that true strength is found when you open your hands, let go of the dark, and choose to walk in the light with someone who knows your soul. I promise to stand beside you, to protect our home, and to walk with you wherever the horizon takes us, for the rest of my days."

Tears glistened in Marin’s eyes, bright and unashamed, reflecting the golden sunset.

"Dorian," Marin whispered, her voice steady and full of profound emotion. "I walked through the dark carrying the weight of a shattered past, believing I would always have to fight alone. You showed me that love isn't a cage—it's a sanctuary. I promise to be your anchor when the winds blow, your partner in every battle we choose to fight, and your home, no matter where we are."

Ryan stepped forward, holding the small velvet box containing the platinum bands. Dorian slid the ring onto Marin’s finger, the cool metal catching the sunlight like a star. Then Marin took the matching band and placed it gently onto Dorian’s hand, sealing their vows with a touch that felt as ancient and permanent as the earth itself.

"By the power vested in me," Miller announced with a warm smile, "and with the unanimous approval of the most discerning Cane Corso in Chicago, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Dorian, you may kiss your bride."

Dorian pulled Marin into his arms, kissing her with a depth of passion, relief, and enduring love that swept away every remnant of the past.
