Chapter 31 - The Last Shadow Fades

As twilight deepened into a velvety night, the stars emerged one by one across the Chicago sky, turning the upper atmosphere into a quiet canopy of glittering diamond dust.
Inside the penthouse, the limestone fireplace cast a warm, dancing glow across the Persian rugs and the tall mahogany bookshelves. Ryan and Elena had returned from their dinner date, joining Dorian and Marin on the terrace for a final nightcap before the weekend.
Ryan raised his crystal tumbler of bourbon toward the shimmering skyline, a thoughtful expression on his face. "To new beginnings," he toasted quietly. "And to never looking back."
"To never looking back," Elena echoed, clinking her glass against his with a bright, confident smile.
Dorian stood slightly apart, his arm resting lightly around Marin’s shoulders as they watched their family—the small, resilient circle of individuals who had risked everything to purge the corruption from their world—stand united in the open air. There were no hidden cameras, no encrypted wiretaps, no armed enforcers lurking in the stairwells. There was only the quiet hum of the city, the steady rhythm of their breathing, and the absolute certainty of tomorrow.
Marin reached up, touching the platinum band on her finger, then letting her hand slide down to intertwine with Dorian’s. The metal was warm against her skin, a permanent seal of the vow they had taken under the white lilacs.
"Do you ever feel like it was all a dream?" Marin whispered softly, her eyes reflecting the twinkling fairy lights strung along the terrace pergola.

"No," Dorian replied, his voice firm, low, and reassuring. "It was real. Every dark alley, every sleepless night, every hard choice. It was the fire that burned away everything that wasn't real. What we have now isn't a dream, Marin. It's the only true thing we ever built."
Titan let out a low, sleepy rumble from his spot across the doorway, as if confirming the absolute truth of his words.
