Chapter 34 - The Legacy of St. Agnes

While Dorian managed the global enterprise from the heights of Vance Tower, Elena Cross was deep in the trenches of community healing at St. Agnes Free Clinic. The newly completed pediatric wing had been open for nearly six months, and its impact on the West Side neighborhood was nothing short of revolutionary.
On a bright Tuesday afternoon, Elena stood in the central hallway talking with Nurse Miller about the upcoming community health fair. The waiting room was filled with the gentle hum of families—mothers holding infants, children flipping through colorful storybooks, and elderly residents receiving routine wellness checks without the crushing anxiety of medical debt.
The heavy front doors chimed, and Damian Cross walked in. He wasn't wearing his corporate suit or his tactical gear today; he wore a simple navy sweater and jeans, looking completely at ease in the vibrant, sunlit space. In his hand, he carried a small, wrapped box from the local bakery—a weekly tradition he had maintained ever since the clinic's grand reopening.
He walked past the reception desk and set the box neatly on the counter beside Elena's appointment book.
"Visiting hours don't start until two," Elena teased gently, her eyes lighting up with an immediate, affectionate smile.
"I’m not a patient today," Damian replied smoothly, leaning his forearms against the counter and looking at her with undisguised adoration. "I’m an investor checking on his favorite asset."
"Oh? And what does the investor think?"
"I think," Damian said softly, reaching across the counter to take her hand in his, "that the clinic looks remarkable. But the head nurse looks like she needs a proper lunch that doesn't come out of a vending machine."
Elena’s pulse fluttered with that familiar, warm glow. She stepped out from behind the counter, slipping her fingers securely into his. "Are you asking me out on a date, Damian Cross?"
May you like
"I am," he smiled, the hard, terrifying edges of the Chicago underworld completely melting away in her presence. "And this time, you don't even have to perform surgery to earn it."
Elena laughed, leaning her head against his shoulder as they walked out into the bright spring sunlight together, knowing that the man who had once bled across her floor had finally found his way home—and that no matter what shadows lurked in the city around them, they would face them side by side, unbroken and unafraid.
