Chapter 20 - The Chessboard at Midnight

The storm outside had intensified by midnight, turning Chicago into a howling fortress of ice and drifting snow. Inside the high-security private terminal at O'Hare International Airport, a Gulfstream private jet touched down with a sharp screech of tires against the frozen tarmac.

Alexei Voronin stepped off the aircraft surrounded by four heavily armed private security operatives, his tailored Italian overcoat snapping violently in the sub-zero wind. Voronin was a man of calculated cruelty, a relic of the old eastern European syndicates who believed that fear was the only currency that truly mattered. He had come to Chicago to reclaim what he believed was his rightful pipeline, or to burn Vance Logistics to the ground in the attempt.

A sleek black armored Lincoln Navigator idling near the hangar doors flashed its headlights twice. Voronin strode toward it, expecting his local contacts to brief him on the operation. Instead, as he pulled open the rear door, he found the interior completely empty—save for a secured satellite phone resting on the leather center console. The screen was illuminated, flashing a single incoming call.

Voronin frowned, glancing warily at his chief security guard before reaching in and picking up the receiver. "Who is this?"

"You're a long way from Geneva, Mr. Voronin," Dorian’s voice came through the speaker—clear, calm, and carrying an absolute, chilling authority. "And your flight back is going to be significantly shorter than your arrival."

Voronin sneered, pressing the phone tighter to his ear. "Dorian Vance. I must admit, I expected you to hide behind your federal prosecutors and your shiny new compliance algorithms. It’s almost disappointing to find you playing street games."

"This isn't a street game," Dorian replied smoothly. "This is a courtesy call. The federal agents waiting at the north hangar gate were notified of your arrival twenty minutes ago. Your assets have been frozen, your transit routes are permanently closed, and your security detail is currently being surrounded by local tactical units who take a very dim view of international felons carrying unregistered firearms on tarmac property."

Voronin spun around, looking toward the perimeter gates. Sure enough, blinding rows of red and blue emergency lights suddenly flashed through the swirling snowstorm as federal vehicles converged on his position from every direction.

"You think the law can touch me?" Voronin snarled, his voice rising in panic. "I have immunity across half of Europe!"

May you like

"You had immunity when this company traded in shadows," Dorian’s voice cut through the speaker like a razor blade. "Today, Vance Logistics stands on clean ground. And the light is burning you out. Turn around, get back on your plane, and tell the rest of the Syndicate of the Seven that Chicago is officially closed for business."

The line went dead with a sharp click. Before Voronin could even curse, federal agents swarmed the tarmac, their weapons drawn and their orders absolute.
