Chapter 6 - The Ghost Awakes

For three agonizing days, Lorenzo fought a brutal, silent battle against a severe fever and massive blood loss.

Hannah did not leave his side for a single second, bathing his burning forehead with cool cloths and forcing him to drink water.

Leo remained in the apartment, terrified but helpful, watching the local news broadcasts with increasing anxiety.

The news reported that Lorenzo Moretti had tragically passed away from a sudden, massive heart attack.

The official story, carefully crafted by Dante and the corrupt doctors, completely erased the violent truth of his assassination.

"Dante is moving fast," Lorenzo observed hoarsely, watching the television from his spot on the sofa.

"He has already taken control of the shipping ports and the warehouse district on the south side."

Hannah brought him a bowl of warm broth, sitting gently beside his feet on the sofa.

"He is telling everyone you named him as your official successor before you died," Leo added nervously from the kitchen.

Lorenzo let out a dark, terrifying laugh that made the hair on Hannah’s arms stand completely straight.

"Dante was always ambitious, but he lacks patience," Lorenzo murmured, taking a slow spoonful of the broth.

"He believes he has secured the throne, which means he will become careless and arrogant."

Lorenzo set the bowl down, his green eyes burning with a renewed, deadly clarity that signaled his fever had finally broken.

"I need a secure burner phone, Leo," Lorenzo commanded, his voice regaining its usual, commanding authority.

Leo didn't hesitate, quickly grabbing a cheap, untraceable prepaid phone from his desk drawer and handing it over.

Lorenzo dialed a highly classified number from memory, waiting as the line rang three times before connecting.

"Speak," a gruff, heavily accented voice answered on the other end.

"It's cold in Chicago, Marcus," Lorenzo stated, using a coded phrase that only his most loyal, hidden enforcer would recognize.

There was a long, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by stunned silence.

"Boss? They told me you were in the ground," Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with sheer disbelief.

"Dante dug the grave, but I refused to lay in it," Lorenzo replied coldly.

"I need you to assemble the loyalists. The men who actually bled for this family, not the cowards drinking Dante’s champagne."

"Consider it done, Boss," Marcus promised fiercely, absolute loyalty dripping from his words. "Where are you?"

"I will contact you tonight with a secure location," Lorenzo instructed. "Do not trust anyone inside the estate."

Lorenzo hung up the phone, a dangerous, predatory smile finally returning to his handsome face.

The king was no longer a ghost hiding in the shadows; he was actively preparing for a massive, bloody war.

He turned his attention back to Hannah, who was quietly gathering the empty soup bowl from the table.

"Hannah," Lorenzo called her name softly, making her pause and turn around.

"You saved my life, and you kept me hidden when I was completely vulnerable."

"But the war starts tonight, and this apartment will become a target the second Dante realizes I am alive."

"I have arranged for Marcus to secure a private, safe flight out of the country for you and your cousin."

"I will ensure you have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your lives."

Hannah stared at him, her heart suddenly aching with an inexplicable, sharp pain.

She had spent her entire life being invisible, blending into the background so she wouldn't be mocked or hurt.

But with Lorenzo, she had finally been seen, valued, and completely respected for who she truly was.

"I don't want to leave, Mr. Moretti," Hannah whispered, her voice cracking with sudden emotion.

Lorenzo’s expression hardened, his protective instincts flaring violently.

"This is not a debate, Hannah," he warned her, standing up slowly, his tall frame dominating the small room.

"If Dante finds you, he will torture you for information, and he will kill you simply because you helped me."

"I will not let you become collateral damage in my war."

Hannah stepped forward, closing the distance between them, looking fearlessly up into his intense green eyes.

"You told me not to shrink for small men," Hannah reminded him fiercely.

"Dante is a small man, and I am not going to run away from him."

May you like

"I know the layout of the estate, I know the security codes, and I know exactly where he hides his ledgers."

"If you want to destroy him, you need me."
