Chapter 11 - The Black Orchid

The fragile peace that had settled over the sprawling Moretti estate shattered on a rainy Tuesday morning, precisely seven months into Hannah’s pregnancy. She was sitting in the heavily fortified sunroom, expertly reviewing the quarterly financial ledgers for the shipping ports, when Marcus burst through the heavy oak doors. His usually stoic, unreadable face was pale, and his breathing was ragged. He completely ignored standard protocol, bypassing the guards and marching directly to the small marble table where Lorenzo was having his morning espresso.
"Boss. We have a massive problem at the south docks," Marcus stated, his voice tight with suppressed panic.
Lorenzo didn't look up from his newspaper immediately, projecting an aura of absolute, terrifying calm. "Handle it, Marcus. That is exactly why I pay you."
Marcus shook his head silently, placing a small, velvet-lined mahogany box directly on top of the newspaper. Inside the box rested a single, perfectly preserved black orchid.
Lorenzo’s espresso cup slipped from his suddenly numb fingers, shattering loudly against the pristine marble floor. Hannah instantly stood up, her hand instinctively resting defensively over her swollen stomach.
"Lorenzo? What is it?" she asked, her voice calm but laced with immediate, sharp concern.
Lorenzo stared at the black flower as if it were a highly venomous snake preparing to strike his throat. "My older brother," Lorenzo whispered, the words sounding like ground glass tearing his vocal cords. "Matteo."
Hannah’s brow furrowed in deep confusion. She had read Lorenzo’s family files meticulously. "You told me Matteo died in a violent prison riot in Palermo almost ten years ago."

Lorenzo finally looked up at her, his vibrant green eyes dark with an ancient, terrifying dread that she had never seen before, not even on the night he was paralyzed. "I paid the warden millions to tell everyone he died. I exiled him, Hannah. Because he was the only man in this entire world I was ever truly afraid of."
Matteo was a monster entirely without a leash, a deeply psychotic man who viewed Lorenzo’s calculated, business-minded approach to the syndicate as a pathetic weakness. And if Matteo had returned to Chicago, he wasn't just coming to steal the throne. He was coming to violently and completely eradicate Lorenzo’s entire bloodline to ensure no one could challenge his rule.
