Chapter 1 - The Cold Truth

Hannah held her breath entirely, pressing her ear flat against his chest.

At first, there was only the terrible, humming silence of the underground room.

Then, she heard it again.

A slow, irregular rhythm, completely distinct from her own racing heart.

Thump... pause... thump.

It was impossibly weak, struggling through the layers of muscle and bandages, but it was undeniably there.

A surge of pure, electric adrenaline shot through Hannah’s exhausted body.

"Oh my God," she gasped aloud, scrambling backward off the metal table.

She nearly tripped over her discarded uniform on the floor but managed to catch her balance against the nearby counter.

She turned around and stared at the man beneath the white sheet.

His skin was no longer the terrifying, ashen gray of a corpse.

A very faint, almost imperceptible flush of pink had returned to his cheeks, fighting the extreme chill of the room.

Hannah’s mind raced with absolute panic and profound confusion.

The doctors had declared him dead over six hours ago.

They had shut off the machines, unplugged the monitors, and dropped the temperature to preserve the body.

But Dr. Caldwell had mentioned a synthetic paralytic compound, a toxin that moved too fast to be ordinary poison.

What if the toxin hadn’t killed him?

What if it had simply slowed his heart rate so significantly that the monitors couldn't detect it, plunging his body into a state of deep, frozen suspended animation?

By dropping the temperature of the room, the doctors had unknowingly sealed his fate, ensuring the paralysis became permanent.

And by holding him, by pressing her natural body heat against him for hours, Hannah had unknowingly acted as a human incubator.

She had slowly, accidentally thawed the frozen blood in his veins, restarting the engine that everyone believed was broken.

"Lorenzo," she called his name again, her voice shaking with desperate hope.

His thick, dark eyelashes fluttered for a fraction of a second.

It was a tiny movement, but to Hannah, it was the loudest shout she had ever heard.

She grabbed her gray uniform from the floor and threw it on as quickly as she could, her hands shaking violently.

She needed to get help.

She needed to find Dr. Caldwell and tell him that the boss was still alive.

But as she ran toward the heavy steel door, a terrifying thought suddenly froze her in her tracks.

Dr. Caldwell had said the ambush was an inside job, orchestrated by someone who knew Lorenzo’s exact movements.

And upstairs in the library, Dante and the other captains were already dividing up Lorenzo’s empire like hungry wolves.

If Hannah opened that door and announced that Lorenzo Moretti had returned from the dead, she wouldn't be saving his life.

She would be signing his true death warrant.

Whoever ordered the hit would simply finish the job while Lorenzo was weak and helpless on the table.

And they would undoubtedly kill the insignificant maid who had ruined their perfect assassination plan.

Hannah pressed her back against the cold steel door, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

She was completely alone in a freezing room with the most dangerous man in Chicago, and they were both surrounded by traitors.

She looked back at the operating table.

Lorenzo let out a soft, shuddering breath, his chest rising visibly beneath the thin sheet.

He was fighting to wake up, fighting the paralysis that had nearly claimed him.

"I won't let them have you," Hannah whispered fiercely to the empty room.

She pushed away from the door, a completely new, terrifying resolve settling deep into her bones.

She wasn't just a maid anymore.

She was a protector.
