Chapter 9 - The Showdown

David’s handsome face twisted rapidly into an ugly, desperate sneer as he realized his manipulation had completely failed.

With terrifying, lightning speed, he pulled a hidden pistol from underneath the heavy mahogany desk.

He aimed the cold barrel directly at my chest, completely willing to violently murder the mother of his child to escape.

Before he could even pull the trigger, Alessandro lunged forcefully in front of me to act as a human shield.

A deafening gunshot echoed violently through the luxurious office.

Alessandro grunted loudly as the bullet tore violently through his left shoulder, spraying blood onto the wall.

Enzo reacted instantly, tackling David to the ground with absolutely bone-crushing force.

The giant guard kicked the gun far away and forcefully pinned David’s arms behind his back, forcing him to his knees.

I rushed frantically to Alessandro’s side, pressing my trembling hands tightly against his heavily bleeding shoulder.

“I'm fine,” Alessandro gritted through his teeth, his dark eyes completely focused on the pathetic man kneeling on the floor.

He slowly stood up, pushing my hands away gently, and walked over to David.

David was sobbing uncontrollably, begging pathetically for his miserable, cowardly life.

“Please, Alessandro, take all the money, just let me walk away!” David cried out, thick blood dripping from his broken nose.

Alessandro pulled his heavy weapon and pressed the cold metal barrel firmly against David’s sweating forehead.

The chaotic room went completely, terrifyingly silent.

Alessandro slowly turned his head and looked directly into my eyes.

“He is legally your husband, Catherine,” Alessandro said softly, offering me the ultimate, final choice.

“If you want him to live, I will let him walk out that door right now.”

I looked deeply into the terrified, pathetic eyes of the man who had completely and ruthlessly destroyed my life.

I thought about the freezing nights I had cried myself to sleep, starving so Logan could eat a single meal.

I thought about the endless panic attacks, the terrifying eviction notices, and the crushing, suffocating grief of being a young widow.

He didn't care if we lived or died on the streets.

I slowly turned my back on my husband, walking purposefully toward the shattered doorway.

“My husband died two years ago,” I stated clearly, my voice completely devoid of any remaining mercy.

“Do whatever you want with this stranger.”

I walked out of the office and into the cool night air, absolutely refusing to look back.

A single, muffled gunshot echoed violently from inside the building.

The heavy, suffocating chain that had bound me to the miserable past was finally and permanently broken.
