Chapter 11 - The Unseen Threat

The peaceful, golden serenity of our highly secure compound was suddenly shattered on a quiet Tuesday morning.
I was standing near the sprawling marble kitchen island, watching the beautiful morning sunlight dance across the expensive countertops.
Alessandro was sitting quietly at the glass dining table, aggressively reviewing his massive, legitimate corporate financial portfolios.
Enzo walked rapidly into the sunlit room, his massive, heavily scarred face completely drained of its usual stoic color.
He silently placed a heavy, blood-stained silver envelope directly onto the pristine glass surface of the dining table.
The warm air in the massive room instantly turned freezing cold, violently suffocating the comfortable spring atmosphere.
Alessandro slowly picked up the ruined envelope, his dark, calculating eyes instantly hardening into pure, lethal black ice.
I walked over to his side immediately, my heart pounding violently against my ribs as I looked at the dark blood.
He carefully opened the thick silver paper and pulled out a single, heavily encrypted black memory drive.
"What is it?" I asked softly, gently placing my trembling hand on his broad, muscular shoulder.
Alessandro let out a harsh, heavily suppressed breath, his massive hands gripping the tiny drive with absolute fury.
"David did not just steal fifty million dollars from my organization before he cowardly faked his death."
"He also aggressively borrowed another thirty million from the Santiago Cartel to fully fund his luxurious escape."
My entire body locked completely in pure, unadulterated terror at the mention of the notoriously ruthless international cartel.
"They just violently executed three of my best border smugglers and left this drive on the bodies as a message."
"Isabella Santiago legally considers my dead husband's massive debt to be my personal financial responsibility."
I felt the entire, beautiful world we had so carefully built rapidly crumbling to pieces beneath my feet.
The ghost of my miserable, abusive husband was still aggressively reaching from the grave to violently destroy my family.
Enzo crossed his massive arms over his chest, his weapon already drawn and resting heavily against his tactical vest.
"The cartel leader explicitly demanded a face-to-face meeting with you and Catherine by midnight tonight," Enzo stated grimly.
Alessandro stood up violently, the heavy wooden chair scraping loudly and aggressively against the polished marble floor.
"Catherine and Logan are absolutely not leaving the heavy protection of this heavily fortified compound," Alessandro commanded fiercely.
I looked deeply into his terrified, protective eyes and felt a sudden, massive surge of fierce, unbreakable courage.
"They will absolutely never stop hunting us if they think I am a weak, pathetic liability hiding in the shadows," I stated firmly.
Alessandro stared at me, completely shocked by the icy, uncompromising steel hiding perfectly within my voice.
"I am the undisputed queen of this incredible empire now, Alessandro, and I will fiercely protect it."
"If Isabella Santiago wants to look the grieving widow in the eye, I will absolutely give her exactly what she wants."
Alessandro slowly reached out and gently cupped my pale cheek, his thumb tracing my jawline with absolute reverence.

"You are the most terrifying, beautiful creature I have ever met in my entire life," he whispered darkly.
We were officially going to war against the most dangerous, ruthless cartel in the world, and I was completely ready.
