Chapter 7 - The Ghost Returns

We were relocated immediately to a heavily fortified underground bunker hidden entirely beneath an abandoned warehouse near the docks.
The air was incredibly thick with tension as dozens of heavily armed, terrifying men prepared their weapons for a massive assault.
Alessandro stood over a massive, detailed blueprint of the Volkov syndicate’s heavily fortified compound.
“David is cowardly hiding inside the main office building on the second floor,” Alessandro pointed aggressively to the map.
“We violently breach the front iron gates, neutralize the outer guards, and take the building by absolute, overwhelming force.”
I walked up to the heavy tactical table, my heart pounding so hard it physically hurt my ribs.
“I am coming with you,” I stated, my voice echoing clearly and firmly in the quiet room.
Alessandro looked up sharply, his dark eyes flashing with immediate, intense disapproval.
“Absolutely not,” he said sharply, stepping toward me.
“It is a highly dangerous suicide mission, Catherine, you are staying right here in the bunker with Logan.”
“He is my husband,” I countered fiercely, lifting my chin and refusing to back down.
“He completely ruined my entire life, and I deserve to look him in the eye when his stolen empire falls.”
Alessandro stared at me for a long, heavy, silent moment.
He clearly saw the fierce, unbreakable determination burning deeply in my soul, and he respected it.
“Enzo,” Alessandro called out loudly without looking away from me.
“You do not leave her side for a single second.”
“If she gets a scratch on her, I will personally end you.”
The giant guard nodded solemnly, handing me a heavy, Kevlar bulletproof vest.
I strapped the heavy armor over my chest, feeling the terrifying, heavy reality of what I was about to do.
I kissed Logan on the forehead, leaving him safely with the older woman who had protected him earlier.
“Mommy will be right back, Captain,” I whispered to my brave son.
We loaded silently into a massive fleet of unmarked, armored vans and drove out into the dead of night.
The Volkov compound was located on the desolate, industrial outskirts of the city, completely surrounded by high concrete walls.
Alessandro didn't bother with a slow, stealthy approach.
His massive lead truck violently rammed through the heavy iron gates, tearing them completely off their reinforced hinges.
The bloody war had officially begun.
I stayed incredibly close behind Enzo as the deafening roar of automatic weapons entirely filled the night air.
We moved systematically through the chaotic, bloody courtyard, stepping over fallen bodies as we aggressively pushed forward.

My entire body was trembling violently, but I absolutely refused to stop moving.
I was finally going to face the miserable ghost that had haunted me for two agonizing years.
