Chapter 8 - The Twisted Offer

We violently breached the heavy oak doors of the main office building, the wood splintering into a thousand pieces.
Alessandro shot the heavy metal lock off the executive suite and aggressively kicked the door wide open.
Sitting behind a massive mahogany desk, looking completely and utterly terrified, was David Winters.
He was dressed in a pristine, custom Italian suit, his hair perfectly styled, looking older but entirely unharmed.
My breath caught painfully in my throat, freezing my lungs.
Seeing him alive, breathing, and cowardly hiding behind a desk shattered the absolute last piece of my broken heart.
David’s terrified eyes darted frantically around the room until they finally, shockingly landed on me.
“Catherine?” he whispered in absolute disbelief, his face draining of all color.
“Hello, David,” I replied, my voice shockingly steady despite the massive hurricane of emotions raging inside me.
Alessandro stood right next to me, his heavy weapon aimed directly at my husband's chest.
“You look remarkably well for a dead man, David,” Alessandro sneered, his deep voice dripping with pure venom.
David raised his shaking hands slowly in surrender, his manipulative mind desperately searching for a cowardly way out.
“Catherine, please, you have to listen to me,” David begged, slowly stepping out from behind the desk.
“I did all of this to protect you and Logan from the mob!”
I let out a harsh, bitter laugh that completely surprised even myself.
“You actually did it to protect us?” I asked, stepping fearlessly closer to him.
“I saw the fake passports in the vault, David.”
“There were absolutely no tickets, money, or identities for me or your starving infant son.”
David hesitated, his perfect, carefully constructed facade completely cracking under the undeniable weight of his own lies.
He suddenly changed tactics, his tone turning smooth, slimy, and highly calculated.
“Catherine, listen, I have fifty million dollars sitting securely in an offshore account,” he pleaded softly.
“Tell Alessandro's men to lower their weapons, and we can walk away rich.”
“We can finally give Logan the perfect, wealthy life he truly deserves.”
I stared at the pathetic, incredibly greedy man standing in front of me.
He actually thought he could buy my forgiveness with the exact money he had stolen from my suffering.
I looked over at Alessandro, the dangerous, violent mob boss who had repeatedly risked his own life to save my son.
Alessandro had been a significantly better father to Logan in a single week than David had ever been in his entire life.

“You don't ever get to say my son's name,” I said coldly, feeling absolutely nothing for him anymore.
“You died two years ago in a car crash.”
