Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

The massive black SUV pulled smoothly into the heavily guarded, private underground garage of a soaring downtown high-rise.

We were quickly rushed into a private, biometric elevator that bypassed the main public lobby entirely.

Enzo carefully carried his bleeding boss straight into a breathtaking, sprawling luxury penthouse that overlooked the entire glittering city.

An underground mob doctor was already waiting inside, rapidly setting up a makeshift surgical table directly on the wildly expensive marble floor.

“Take the girl and the boy to the secure guest wing,” Alessandro grunted in pain as the doctor began urgently cutting away his ruined shirt.

“Feed them well and keep them perfectly, absolutely safe.”

A quiet, impeccably dressed older woman appeared instantly from the hallway and gently guided me toward a massive, beautifully decorated bedroom.

The lavish room was significantly larger than the entire dilapidated apartment I had lived in for the last two years.

I carefully laid Logan on the massive king-sized bed, wrapping him securely in soft, expensive silk blankets until he finally stopped trembling.

Exhaustion quickly overtook his tiny, traumatized body, and he fell heavily into a deep, dreamless sleep.

I sat alone in the dark on the edge of the bed, silently watching his small chest rise and fall.

My fragile mind was spinning completely and uncontrollably out of its orbit.

David was truly alive.

The man who had lovingly held my hand in the delivery room, the man who had promised to protect me forever, was a complete monster.

He had intentionally and meticulously left us behind to face crushing poverty, eviction notices, and absolute, suffocating grief.

A quiet, respectful knock on the heavy oak door violently pulled me out of my dark, spiraling thoughts.

It was Enzo, holding a silver tray loaded with hot, gourmet food and a large glass of very expensive red wine.

“The boss is fully stable,” the giant man said gently, carefully setting the heavy tray on the nightstand.

“He wants to speak with you in the living room whenever you are ready.”

I forced myself to aggressively eat a few bites of the roasted chicken, desperately needing the physical energy for whatever came next.

I tucked the heavy blankets tightly around Logan, kissed his warm forehead, and walked out into the massive, dimly lit living room.

Alessandro was sitting rigidly in a custom leather armchair, his chest heavily and professionally bandaged, a crystal glass of amber whiskey resting in his hand.

He looked incredibly pale from the blood loss, but the lethal, commanding aura surrounding him was entirely and terrifyingly intact.

“Sit,” he offered smoothly, gesturing with his glass to the plush velvet sofa directly across from him.

I sat down slowly, instinctively crossing my arms defensively over my chest.

“Tell me absolutely everything you know about David's disappearance,” I demanded, finding a sudden, burning spark of incredible courage.

Alessandro took a slow, measured sip of his expensive whiskey, studying me closely.

“David accidentally discovered that my organization was under a massive, secret investigation by the federal government.”

“He brilliantly fabricated fake financial records, entirely drained our untraceable offshore accounts, and literally bought a fresh corpse from the city morgue.”

“He burned the vehicle to absolute ash to ensure dental records were the only possible way to officially identify the body.”

“He then heavily paid off the medical examiner to legally sign your husband's death certificate without asking questions.”

Hot tears of pure, agonizing betrayal completely blurred my vision, stinging my eyes.

“Why didn't he just take us with him?” I whispered into the quiet room, my voice breaking under the weight of the rejection.

“Because a highly visible wife and a crying infant are massive, dangerous liabilities when you are running from the mob,” Alessandro replied coldly.

I closed my eyes tightly, letting the horrific, undeniable truth sink deeply into my bones.

I had spent two miserable years desperately mourning a phantom who didn't care if we lived or died.

Now, I was going to help the most dangerous mafia boss in the city hunt him down.
