Chapter 1 - The Dead Man's Ring

I stared down at the heavy gold band resting in Alessandro Romano’s blood-soaked palm, feeling the air completely leave my lungs.

It was entirely impossible.

I had personally buried my husband, David, with that exact same ring two agonizing years ago.

My chest tightened so fiercely I could barely draw a single breath, the sterile smell of the hospital suddenly making me nauseous.

The loud, rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was the only sound echoing in the freezing trauma suite.

Alessandro’s dark, piercing eyes never left my face, burning with an intensity that demanded my absolute attention.

Despite the thick, dark blood soaking through his surgical bandages, his grip on my three-year-old son’s small wrist was surprisingly gentle.

“You’re lying to me,” I whispered, my voice trembling violently with a mixture of raw terror and absolute confusion.

“I stood in the freezing rain and saw the car burn to a blackened shell.”

“I personally identified his melted watch at the county morgue.”

Alessandro let out a harsh, agonizing cough that rattled deeply in his ruined chest, spraying tiny droplets of crimson onto the white sheets.

“A metal watch can be easily placed on the wrist of a dead stranger, Catherine,” he rasped, his voice low and gravelly.

The towering guard with blood on his massive hands immediately stepped forward, pulling a heavy, matte-black weapon from his tailored jacket.

“Boss, we need to get you out of this building right now,” the giant man said urgently, his eyes scanning the shattered doorway.

“The professional shooters who ambushed you could still be sweeping the lower floors.”

Alessandro slowly raised a weak, trembling hand, silencing his loyal bodyguard instantly without looking away from me.

“David Winters was my chief financial officer for five years,” Alessandro continued, his voice echoing with a dangerous, lethal calm.

“He was a brilliant accountant who flawlessly laundered my organization's money through legitimate real estate.”

“Then, he stole fifty million dollars in untraceable cash and vanished into thin air in a fiery, staged crash.”

My knees suddenly felt entirely hollow, and I gripped the cold metal edge of the hospital bed so tightly my knuckles turned bone white.

My husband had been a quiet, boring accountant who packed a turkey sandwich for lunch every day and constantly complained about his morning commute.

He absolutely wasn't a criminal mastermind who boldly stole millions from the most feared mafia syndicate on the East Coast.

But looking at the familiar scratch on the gold ring in Alessandro's hand, a sickening, terrifying realization washed over my entire body.

David had always demanded that I never, ever look inside his heavy, locked leather briefcase.

He had always taken late-night phone calls outside in the freezing snow, claiming it was just his demanding corporate boss.

“Why are you telling me this right now?” I choked out, hot tears of absolute betrayal finally spilling down my pale cheeks.

“Because whoever ambushed me in the street tonight was heavily funded by your dead husband,” Alessandro stated coldly.

He slowly released Logan’s tiny wrist and reached out to grasp my trembling hand, his skin burning with fever.

“They know David is still alive, and they know he is hiding.”

“And they will inevitably come for his vulnerable wife and child to force him out of the shadows.”

Logan looked up at me, hugging his worn-out stuffed bear tightly against his small chest, completely unaware of the nightmare unfolding.

“Mommy, is the magic man going to be okay?” my innocent son asked, his big brown eyes wide with genuine concern.

Before I could even attempt to answer him, the heavy wooden door of the trauma suite violently splintered apart.

Deafening gunfire erupted in the hospital hallway, echoing like terrifying thunder against the polished tile walls.

Alessandro’s tired eyes instantly hardened into pure, unforgiving black ice.

“Enzo,” Alessandro commanded the giant guard, his voice entirely devoid of fear.

“Get the girl and the boy out of this building immediately.”

“If they die tonight, you die.”

My miserable, exhausting life as an invisible, struggling hospital cleaner was officially and violently over.
