Chapter 4 - The Music Box

Three strange, tense days passed slowly inside the luxurious golden cage of the downtown penthouse.

Alessandro’s physical recovery was nothing short of miraculous, driven entirely by his fierce, unbreakable willpower and stubbornness.

To my complete and utter surprise, he showed a strange, fiercely protective softness toward little Logan.

He had casually ordered his heavily armed men to bring hundreds of dollars worth of expensive toys to the penthouse.

I watched in absolute disbelief as the ruthless, feared crime boss sat awkwardly on the floor, helping my son build a massive castle out of colorful blocks.

“You’re the magic man who woke up,” Logan declared happily, handing Alessandro a blue plastic block with a bright smile.

Alessandro smiled faintly, a remarkably genuine expression that completely transformed his hard, battle-scarred face.

“I only woke up because you generously gave me your magic bear, little man,” Alessandro replied smoothly, placing the block on the tower.

I stood quietly in the doorway, feeling a strange, entirely unexpected flutter in my chest that I quickly and aggressively ignored.

Alessandro stood up slowly, groaning slightly as his fresh stitches pulled, and walked over to where I was standing.

“We desperately need to find a solid starting point, Catherine,” he said, his tone shifting instantly back to strictly lethal business.

“Did David leave absolutely anything behind before he allegedly died?”

“A strange key, a coded note, a random storage unit receipt tucked in a book?”

I shook my head, deeply frustrated by my own complete uselessness in the situation.

“The police gave me his burned leather wallet and his wedding ring in a plastic evidence bag.”

“I had to ruthlessly sell absolutely everything else we owned just to pay for Logan's diapers and asthma medicine.”

Alessandro stepped significantly closer, his dark, intense eyes searching my face with absolute focus.

“Think harder, Catherine,” he commanded gently, his voice a low rumble.

“A highly calculated man like David absolutely doesn't vanish without leaving a hidden, secure failsafe for himself.”

I closed my eyes, desperately digging through the painful, blurry memories of our very last week together.

Then, a sudden, sharp memory flashed brilliantly in my mind.

The broken wooden music box.

David had given it to me on our very first anniversary, but the internal metal gears had broken years ago.

When I casually tried to throw it away during our move to a smaller apartment, he had snatched it out of my hands aggressively.

“Never, ever throw this away, Catherine,” he had snapped, looking strangely panicked and unusually angry.

I opened my eyes, my heart suddenly racing against my ribs.

“I have a taped cardboard box of sentimental junk hidden under my bed in my miserable apartment,” I said breathlessly.

“There is an old, heavily broken wooden music box inside.”

Alessandro instantly pulled a sleek, encrypted black phone from his pocket.

“Enzo,” he barked sharply into the receiver.

“Prepare a heavily armored vehicle immediately.”

“We are going to Catherine's apartment right now.”
