Chapter 60 - The Dawn of Reckoning

The first rays of morning light broke through the rusted iron grate of the drainage exit, illuminating the banks of the Thames where the old industrial docks met the open river. The air was biting cold, carrying the sharp scent of salt and fuel.

Anthony and I crawled out of the tunnel, bruised, exhausted, but alive. We flagged down a passing cab using a handful of emergency cash, directing the driver toward the British intelligence liaison office on the outskirts of the city—a neutral zone where official corruption couldn't easily pierce the armored gates.

As the cab sped along the highway, watching the London skyline rise in the morning mist, I leaned my head against Anthony's shoulder, closing my eyes for a brief moment of peace.

*Maya,* I thought, picturing her bright smile, her sweet laughter, the strawberry frosting from her seventh birthday party flashing like a beacon of light in the darkness. *We're coming home.*

The cab pulled up to the imposing concrete security checkpoint of the intelligence agency. Anthony stepped out first, flashing a classified diplomatic credential that commanded immediate attention from the armed guards at the gate.

As we walked up the grand stone steps toward the heavy glass doors, ready to hand over the micro-SD card and shatter Vanguard Global forever, the secure satellite phone in Anthony’s pocket suddenly vibrated with a single, sharp incoming call.

Anthony froze, pulling the phone out of his pocket. The caller ID displayed a private, unlisted number originating directly from Geneva.

Slowly, with a tense jaw, Anthony pressed accept and brought the phone to his ear.

A familiar, icy voice echoed from the speaker—smooth, calm, and utterly chilling. *"Good morning, Mr. Brooks. I trust you enjoyed your little excursion in London. Before you walk through those doors... I suggest you look across the street at the black sedan parked by the river."*

My breath caught in my throat. I spun around, my eyes scanning the street below the grand stone steps.

Parked directly across the boulevard was a black Mercedes-Maybach. The rear tinted window rolled down slowly, revealing a small, familiar pink jacket sitting in the back seat—and a single, cold digital tablet resting beside it, displaying a live video feed of Maya sleeping peacefully in a room we had never seen before.

May you like

Anthony dropped the phone to his side, his face draining of all color, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned completely white.

Vance’s voice continued to echo faintly from the open speaker on the pavement: *"Checkmate, Mr. and Mrs. Brooks. Now... shall we discuss terms?"*
