Chapter 39 - The Last Warning

Later that evening, after Maya had gone to bed and the house was wrapped in a comforting silence, Anthony finally pulled the white envelope from his pocket and laid it flat on the kitchen island.

"What is that?" I asked, my heart skipping a beat as the familiar sense of dread crept back into the room.

"Marcus found it on his windshield when he left his office," Anthony said grimly, breaking the seal with a steady finger. He pulled out a single sheet of heavy cardstock paper.

There was no printed text. Just a hand-drawn sketch of the multi-layered corporate signet ring we had seen on the intruders' gloves, and beneath it, a short handwritten note in precise, elegant cursive:

*“Empires fall, Mr. Brooks. But kings simply build new ones. Enjoy your victory. It has an expiration date.”*

"They're not giving up," I whispered, the paper trembling in my hands. "Even with Vanguard destroyed, whoever is pulling the strings is still out there."

"Let them try," Anthony said, his voice hard and resolute as he stepped up behind me, wrapping his arms around my shoulders and pulling me close. "We fought them off when we had nothing, and we defeated them when they had an empire. If they want to come for us again, they’ll have to go through both of us."

I looked up into his eyes and saw the fierce, unbreakable love that had kept our family together through every storm. We had protected our home, we had protected Maya, and we had uncovered the truth.

The next morning dawned bright and clear. The suburban neighborhood was peaceful, the birds chirping in the sprawling oak trees, and the golden sunlight spilling across our front porch. Maya bounced down the stairs, full of energy and laughter, chattering endlessly about a school project she was working on.

We made pancakes, laughed together at the kitchen island, and walked her to the school bus hand in hand, just like any normal, happy family.
