Chapter 19 - The Foundation of Stone

Spring returned to the suburbs with an explosion of color—vibrant green lawns, blooming cherry blossoms, and warm afternoon breezes that carried the scent of freshly cut grass and blooming lilacs.
Our lives had settled into a rhythm of profound, unshakable peace.
On a bright Saturday morning in May, the backyard was once again filled with laughter, though this time there was no tension, no looming threats, and no uninvited guests at the gate. Maya was running through the sprinkler with her friends, her laughter bubbling up into the clear blue sky.
Anthony and I stood on the back deck, watching her.
Without warning, Anthony dropped down onto one knee right there on the wooden boards of the deck, amid the scattered chalk drawings and garden tools.
I stopped breathing, my hand flying to my mouth as my eyes widened.
Anthony reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box. He flipped it open, revealing a simple, elegant platinum band set with a single, brilliant diamond that caught the afternoon sunlight and scattered tiny rainbows across the deck.
"Clara," Anthony said, his voice steady, deep, and filled with a quiet emotion that made my throat tighten. "We built this life out of ashes and broken glass. We fought for every inch of ground we’re standing on. And I don't ever want to spend another day of my life not calling you my wife."
Tears spilled over my eyelashes, hot and fast, but this time they were pure joy.
"Yes," I whispered, dropping down to my knees in front of him, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, a million times yes."
Anthony slipped the ring onto my finger, the platinum cool and perfect against my skin, before pulling me into a deep, fierce, unhurried kiss.
From across the lawn, Maya spotted us. Her eyes went wide, and she let out a shriek of absolute delight, dropping the water hose and sprinting across the grass toward us as fast as her legs could carry her.
"You're getting married! You're getting married!" she shouted, diving into the pile and wrapping her arms around both of us, nearly knocking us over.
May you like
We laughed, the three of us tangled together in the warm afternoon sun, surrounded by the home we had built, the family we had chosen, and the future that was finally, completely ours.
