Chapter 32 - The Ghost in the System

"That’s impossible," Anthony muttered, leaning closer to the screen as if sheer willpower could alter the glowing text. "We liquidated his assets. We stripped him of his corporate immunities during the trial. The judge signed the order freezing all domestic and international holdings."

"Judges only freeze what is declared, Anthony," I said, my voice shaking as I scrolled further down the digital rabbit hole. "Look at the routing numbers. This isn't a domestic holding. It’s an offshore trust that operates independently of federal banking regulations. He didn't lose his wealth; he just hid it behind a labyrinth of secondary proxies before the trial even began."

Maya wandered into the living room, sensing the heavy, suffocating atmosphere in the kitchen. She looked up at us with wide, innocent eyes. "Mommy? Daddy? Are we going somewhere?"

"No, sweetheart," Anthony forced a bright, reassuring smile, kneeling down to her eye level. "Mommy and Daddy are just looking at some boring adult paperwork. Why don’t you go grab your coloring book in your room?"

As soon as Maya skipped down the hallway, the smile vanished from Anthony's face, replaced by a cold, hardened determination. "We need to talk to Marcus. Now."

Marcus, our fiercely loyal attorney and long-time family friend, arrived at our front door within twenty minutes, looking like a man who hadn’t slept in days. He didn't even bother taking off his trench coat as he stepped into the living room and threw a thick manila folder onto the coffee table.

"I received a similar alert this morning," Marcus said without preamble, pacing across our rug. "Not just for your house, Clara. Three other properties belonging to families connected to the original corporate whistleblower case have received identical legal notices. Someone is systematically reactivating dormant claims."

"How?" I demanded, crossing my arms defensively. "Victor Vance is behind bars. I watched the bailiff lead him away!"

"Victor is a figurehead," Marcus sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. "A wealthy, vindictive figurehead, yes, but he’s just a pawn for a much larger syndicate. The organization behind him—the one that uses that weird multi-layered signet ring—they don’t care about Victor as a person. They care about their investments. And right now, they view your home and your family as an unresolved liability."

"So what do we do?" Anthony asked, his fists clenched tightly at his sides. "Do we wait for them to evict us? Do we fight this in court again?"

"Court takes months, Anthony," Marcus warned grimly. "And their legal team has deep pockets that can drag this out until every cent you have is gone. If you want to stop this permanently, you don't fight them in a courtroom. You find the source of their funding and cut off the head of the snake."
