Chapter 20 - The Unseen Watcher

The wedding was small, intimate, and perfect in every possible way.
Held in our own backyard under the sprawling branches of the old oak tree, surrounded by our closest friends, good food, and endless laughter, it was everything a celebration of true love should be. There were no fake smiles, no forced pleasantries, and no shadows lurking at the edge of the fence.
When the sun finally dipped below the horizon, string lights flickered to life overhead, casting a warm, golden glow across the lawn where Maya was dancing barefoot with her friends.
Anthony stood beside me, his arm wrapped securely around my waist, his thumb rhythmically tracing the new platinum band on my finger.
"Penny for your thoughts, Mrs. Brooks," he murmured, pressing a soft kiss to the top of my head.
"I was just thinking that it’s almost too quiet," I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. "Almost like a fairy tale."
"Fairy tales have magic," Anthony replied softly. "What we have is real. We earned every single piece of this."
I nodded, feeling a deep, abiding sense of completion wash over me. The storm had passed. The house was standing. The family was safe.
Across the street, parked discreetly beneath the deep shadows of an overgrown maple tree that lined the curb, a sleek, unmarked black sedan sat idling in the cool night air.
Inside the darkened vehicle, the driver’s side window rolled down an inch. A hand—pale, manicured, and adorned with a heavy silver ring—rested against the steering wheel, watching the glowing lights of our backyard through the windshield.

The figure in the shadows lifted a cell phone to their ear, dialing a single number that had been blocked from every public registry for months.
"It’s me," a cold, clipped voice whispered softly into the receiver, eyes fixed unwaveringly on the happy family dancing under the lights. "Tell the associates we’re ready. Phase two starts tonight."
