Chapter 35 - Shadows in the Hallway

My heart skipped a beat, and every instinct as a mother flared into blinding intensity. I grabbed a heavy iron skillet from the stovetop rack, my hands trembling but my grip ironclad. Anthony stepped in front of me, his eyes scanning the pitch-black hallway with fierce protection.
"Stay behind me," Anthony whispered, his voice steady despite the adrenaline pumping through his veins.
The creak of the floorboards drew closer, moving methodically from the front entryway toward the kitchen. Whoever was inside wasn't running or hiding; they were walking with absolute, terrifying confidence. They knew the layout of the house. They knew we were awake.

A small, high-intensity flashlight beam sliced through the darkness of the hallway, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. The beam swept across the living room rug and locked directly onto the kitchen doorway.
"Mr. and Mrs. Brooks," a synthesized, modulated voice echoed from the shadows behind the light. It was coming from a portable speaker attached to whoever was holding the flashlight. "Save yourselves the trouble. The USB drive on the counter contains proprietary code belonging to Vanguard Global. Surrendering it voluntarily is your only remaining option."
"You broke into my home," Anthony shouted back, stepping forward into the doorway to block their line of sight to the kitchen island where the drive lay. "You are trespassing, and the police are already on their way!"
"The police are currently dealing with a massive municipal grid failure three miles away," the synthesized voice replied calmly. "No one is coming, Anthony. You are entirely alone."
A tall, dark figure stepped into the edge of the flashlight beam. They wore a heavy tactical jacket, and on the right glove, catching the faint reflection of the light, was a heavy silver signet ring with an intricate corporate crest.
Before the intruder could take another step toward the kitchen, the soft glow of the laptop screen illuminated the counter. I hadn't turned the laptop off—it was still running on battery power, and the moment the USB drive was plugged into the port, an automated security protocol my father had written kicked in.

A shrill, deafening digital alarm began to wail from the laptop speakers, echoing through the quiet house.
The intruder froze. The synthesized voice let out a sharp gasp of surprise as the laptop screen flashed a bright crimson warning: *“DATA PURGE INITIATED. LOCAL TRACE ACTIVATED.”*
