Chapter 38 - The Vanguard Collapse

The fallout from the data leak was immediate, catastrophic, and completely unprecedented. Within forty-eight hours of the public server release, major news networks picked up the story. The investigative reports detailing Vanguard Global’s decades-long corruption, illegal land grabs, and corporate espionage dominated every morning talk show and front-page headline.
Federal agents raided Vanguard’s downtown headquarters, carting out dozens of boxes of physical documents and seizing digital servers before executives could wipe them. Arrest warrants were issued for top-tier board members, including several high-ranking officials who had previously operated with absolute impunity.
Anthony and I watched the unfolding chaos from our living room television, sitting side by side on the sofa with mugs of coffee. Maya was at school for the day, her teachers completely unaware of the dramatic events that had played out in her home just nights before.
"They're actually falling," Anthony said in disbelief, watching live footage of federal agents hauling handcuffs onto corporate executives outside a gleaming glass skyscraper. "After all this time... they're actually being held accountable."
"It's justice, Anthony," I said, though my phone remained uncomfortably quiet on the coffee table. "Real justice. But I can't shake the feeling that the person running local operations—the one in the dark gray SUV—is still out there."
Marcus walked through our front door uninvited, holding a fresh legal document and looking more relieved than I had ever seen him.
"The municipal registry has been completely scrubbed," Marcus announced, tossing the papers onto the coffee table with a satisfying thud. "The fraudulent deeds attached to your property have been officially nullified by federal order. Your home is yours, free and clear, with zero legal encumbrances."
A wave of profound relief washed over me. I looked at Anthony, and for the first time in months, a genuine, unburdened smile spread across his face.
"We won," Anthony whispered, pulling me into a tight, warm embrace.
"We won," I repeated, burying my face in his chest.
May you like
Yet, as Marcus gathered his things to leave, he pulled Anthony aside for a quiet word by the front door. I couldn't hear what they were saying, but I saw Marcus hand Anthony a single, sealed white envelope bearing no return address.
Anthony’s expression darkened instantly as he took the envelope, sliding it slowly into his pocket without a word.
