Chapter 47 - The Lockdown

The progress bar on the server terminal ticked upward with agonizing slowness: 45%... 60%... 75%... The air in the subterranean vault seemed to grow instantly hotter as the cooling fans abruptly shifted into an emergency override mode, emitting a high-pitched whine that drowned out even our own thoughts. Suddenly, the overhead fluorescent lights flickered violently and died, plunging the massive server room into absolute darkness, save for the frantic, erratic blinking of thousands of blue and amber server LEDs. Alarms began to wail—a deafening, piercing klaxon that echoed off the concrete walls and vibrated straight through our chests. *WARNING: SYSTEM INTEGRITY COMPROMISED. FACILITY LOCKDOWN INITIATED. ALL PERSONNEL REPORT TO NEAREST EVACUATION PROTOCOL.* "We’ve tripped their automated defense grid!" Anthony shouted over the blaring alarms, his face illuminated only by the harsh red light of the terminal screen. The progress bar hit 90%... 95%... 100%. *EXECUTION SUCCESSFUL. DATA PIPELINE PURGED.*

"The script is locked in!" Anthony yelled, ripping the flash drive from the USB port and shoving it into his tactical pocket. "We need to get out of here right now!" We turned and sprinted back down the narrow server aisle toward the freight elevator, our footsteps echoing sharply against the concrete floor. But as we burst out of the aisle into the central elevator lobby, our path was abruptly blocked. Heavy steel blast doors were sliding down from the ceiling across every exit corridor, sealing the subterranean levels off from the surface. We watched in horror as the main elevator doors slammed shut with a resounding metallic crash, the control panel flashing a bright red *OUT OF SERVICE* sign. "They’ve sealed the shafts!" I gasped, panic threatening to overwhelm my rational thoughts. "How do we get out?" Anthony grabbed my shoulders, his eyes fierce and focused amidst the chaos of wailing alarms and flashing strobe lights. "The maintenance stairs! Marcus’s blueprints showed an emergency fire egress stairwell at the end of sector twelve. Move!"

We scrambled through the maze of server racks, dodging automated ceiling suppression nozzles that began hissing as they prepared to flood the room with fire-suppressant gas. The air quickly grew thick with a metallic, chemical fog that burned our throats and made it difficult to breathe. Coughing violently, we finally reached the heavy fire door marked with a glowing red exit sign at the end of sector twelve. Anthony threw his weight against the push bar, and the door swung open, revealing a steep, winding concrete stairwell plunging upward into the darkness. We began climbing the endless flights of stairs two at a time, our legs burning from exhaustion and our lungs screaming for clean air. Every level we ascended brought us closer to the surface, but the wailing alarms followed us up the concrete shaft like a relentless monster. By the time we reached the heavy steel exit door at the top of the stairwell, my entire body was shaking with fatigue. Anthony slammed his shoulder into the push bar, and the door burst open, spilling us out into the cool, damp night air of the industrial parkway.
