Chapter 44 - The Unwritten Horizon

The espressos arrived in thick, white porcelain cups, sending up a rich, dark crema that smelled intensely of roasted hazelnut and bitter chocolate. Dominic picked up his cup, feeling the heat radiate through the ceramic against his fingertips, and took a slow, deliberate sip. The flavor was bold, clean, and uncompromising—exactly as coffee was meant to be.

Across the table, Vince took his pastry and tore off a piece, chewing thoughtfully while watching the street traffic ebb and flow.

"So," Vince said quietly, leaning forward slightly over the table. "What comes next? The legal restructuring of the overseas accounts is finalized, the domestic shell companies are fully dissolved into public trusts, and the estate is legally clean from foundation to chimney. We don't have an empire to run anymore, Dominic."

Dominic set his espresso cup down gently on the saucer, the ceramic making a soft, crisp click against the iron table. He looked out past the green awning toward the brilliant blue expanse of the autumn sky above Manhattan, where a lone pigeon drifted lazily on an updraft of wind between two brick apartment buildings.

"We don't have an empire," Dominic agreed, his voice steady, resonant, and completely at peace. "We have something much better."

"What's that?" Vince asked.

"Time," Dominic said simply.

He gripped his chair, turning it slightly to face the open avenue where the afternoon sun was beginning to flood the street with a warm, amber glow. The ledger from 1998 was gathering dust on a small table in an empty library three dozen miles away, locked behind heavy doors that no one would ever need to open again. The federal dossiers were archived in subterranean vaults, and the wars of the past had finally burned themselves out into ash.

There were no more strings to pull, no more enemies to anticipate, and no more blood debts to collect. There was only the city, the coffee, the open road, and a future that belonged entirely to them.

"Let's finish our coffee, Vince," Dominic said, his dark eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable strength as he looked toward the horizon. "We have places to be, and for the first time in our lives, nobody is waiting for us to bleed."
