Chapter 33 - The Iron Grip

The heavy oak doors of the library vibrated as the mechanical pneumatic pistons locked into place, sealing the reinforced steel framework with a definitive, bone-chilling thud. Inside the pitch-black room, the dying embers of the hearth cast jagged, flickering shadows against the mahogany bookshelves. Julian slammed his palm onto the mahogany desk, his breath hitching as the digital interface on his terminal continued to flash its relentless red warning.

"He locked the physical bulkheads," Julian muttered, his voice tightening with a sudden edge of panic as he realized the full extent of the trap. The automated software he had spent months hacking was useless against a hard-wired, analog override installed before the turn of the century. "Isabella, get the satellite phone—route an emergency bypass through the Zurich relay before the local lines go dead completely."

Isabella moved swiftly across the dark room toward the antique writing desk where the encrypted backup rig sat. But before her fingers could touch the keyboard, the overhead emergency lights clicked on with a harsh, glaring white snap.

Standing in the center of the double doorway—which had miraculously cracked open just an inch on its manual hydraulic track—was Dominic. His wheelchair sat motionless on the threshold, flanked by Vince and two heavily armed operatives who held the secondary manual levers in place. In Dominic’s right hand, the suppressed pistol was leveled with absolute, unshakeable precision directly at Julian’s chest.

"You spent twenty years studying my paranoia, Julian," Dominic said, his voice quiet, carrying the cold weight of absolute authority. "You forgot that a paranoid man never relies on a single system he doesn't own down to the copper wiring."
