Chapter 31 - The Last Move

The red laser dots flickered across the stone floor of the foyer, casting erratic, blood-red patterns over the marble tiles and the worn leather ledger sitting between Dominic’s wheels. The air was thick with the scent of ozone and chilled fog drifting through the open doors behind Vince and his men.

"You win the board, Julian," Dominic said, his voice remarkably calm, carrying the weight of a man who had survived too many wars to panic at the final defeat. "You took the accounts, you subverted the network, you turned the people closest to me into your instruments. But a king sitting on a stolen throne is still just a target in the dark."

Julian smiled, though the expression did not reach his eyes. "Spoken like a man who refuses to accept checkmate. You think violence is still your currency, Dominic. You think because you can still pull a trigger or order a hit, you remain dangerous. But power in this century isn't measured in guns or blood—it's measured in infrastructure. And your infrastructure now belongs to the past."

Julian turned slightly, gesturing toward the grand arched doorway leading to the estate’s private library. "Come. Let's not make a spectacle of it in front of the help. There are documents to sign, final resignations to file, and a quiet exit to arrange for you and your loyal guard."

"I don't go anywhere in a wheelchair pushed by an executioner," Dominic replied coldly.

"Then stay here," Julian said indifferently, turning his back as he began to walk toward the library. "Freeze in your magnificent mausoleum with your memories and your ledgers. By morning, the world will know that Dominic Moretti retired from public life due to failing health, handing over the reins to his trusted partners. The transition will be seamless. Clean. Inevitable."

Isabella lingered for a fraction of a second, looking down at Dominic with something resembling lingering curiosity, before turning to follow Julian into the shadowed corridors of the library. The heavy oak doors swung shut behind them with a muffled, resonant thud, sealing off the inner sanctum.

Vince lowered his rifle a fraction, his chest heaving with suppressed fury. "Boss... we can breach the side vents, bypass the local server room through the old wine cellar, and take them before they finish the transfer signatures. We still have the physical keys to the offline manual overrides."

Dominic stared at the closed library doors, his mind cutting through the layers of the trap like a razor. He reached down, his fingers brushing against the cold leather cover of the 1998 ledger at his feet. As his hand touched the spine, a small, subtle LED light blinked green beneath the worn binding—a hardware trigger he had installed decades ago, completely independent of the digital network Julian had hijacked.

"Let them think they've won the house, Vince," Dominic whispered, a faint, dangerous shadow of a smile touching the corner of his mouth. "They forgot that every system built by a thief always leaves a backdoor for the man who wrote the rules."
