Chapter 21 - A New Foundation

The afternoon sun poured generously through the towering floor-to-ceiling windows of Dominic’s private study, flooding the oak-paneled room with warm, golden light. The heavy mahogany desk was clear of clutter, save for a single secure terminal displaying the encrypted financial ledger of the revived Moretti syndicate.
Dominic sat in his wheelchair behind the desk, reviewing the updated operational deployment reports for the eastern seaboard. Every shipping lane, every logistics hub, and every financial asset was back under his direct control. The brief fracture in the family tree had been pruned away completely, leaving the trunk stronger and deeper-rooted than ever before.
The heavy oak door of the study clicked open softly, and Isabella walked in carrying a silver tray with two cups of dark, steaming espresso. She set one gently beside the terminal before leaning against the edge of the desk, looking down at him with a soft, knowing smile playing at the corners of her lips.
"You've been staring at those screens for three hours straight," Isabella noted gently, her voice breaking through the quiet hum of the electronics. "The empire isn't going to vanish if you take a breath for ten minutes."
Dominic looked up, the hard, impenetrable edge in his dark eyes softening noticeably as they met hers. He reached out, taking her hand and running his thumb gently over the three-carat princess-cut diamond sparkling on her finger.

"I'm not worried about the empire running away," Dominic said, a rare, faint smile touching his lips. "I'm just making sure it never has to be rebuilt twice."
Isabella leaned down, pressing her forehead gently against his, her breath warm against his skin. "It won't be. Because you aren't fighting ghosts anymore."
