Chapter 30 - The Logic of the Cage

"You planned this for years," Dominic said, breaking the heavy silence that hung over the foyer. It wasn't a question; it was the final reconciliation of disparate data points that had troubled his margins for months—the missing audit trails in the Cayman holdings, the subtle shifts in corporate governance across their European fronts, the quiet consolidation of power while he sat confined to his chair.

Julian walked down another step, his polished leather shoes clicking sharply against the stone. "Years, Dominic? Try decades. Ever since that night in 1998 when you decided that survival required a scapegoat. You took the throne, you took the immunity, and you left me to take the federal indictment. You thought prison broke me. Instead, it gave me time to study the architecture of your paranoia."

"And you decided to become me," Dominic countered, his voice steady, carrying an undertone of grim irony. "Tailored suits, identical cars, living in the shadow of a ghost you swore to destroy."

"Not a ghost," Julian corrected sharply, stopping three steps above the landing floor, looking down with cold intensity. "A successor. The only difference between us, Dominic, is that you let your body fail you. You let sentimentality and isolation rot your judgment from the inside out. You sat in this sprawling mausoleum, watching security feeds on a screen, pretending you were still the master of the world while the world moved on without you."

Isabella descended the stairs beside Julian, her footsteps silent against the carpeted runner. She walked past the leather ledger lying at Dominic’s feet without glancing down, stopping just out of arm's reach of the wheelchair.

"The transfer is complete, Dominic," Isabella said quietly, her tone devoid of malice, carrying only the chilling weight of finality. "The global accounts, the real estate portfolios, the shipping lanes—all redirected through encrypted proxies that cannot be unfrozen by a court order or a physical key. You are legally, financially, and operationally nonexistent."

Vince shifted his weight, his knuckles white around his carbine grip. "Boss, give the word. We take them out, lock down the hardlines, and reset the servers manually. We can still purge the network."

"Try it," Julian challenged softly, gesturing toward the high windows overlooking the front terrace.

Outside, the red blinking lights of a dozen automated security turrets—mounted discreetly along the upper eaves of the estate—suddenly whirred to life, swiveling downward in unison to lock their laser-targeting arrays directly onto the front steps where the security detail stood exposed. The red dots danced across Vince’s chest and the shoulders of the armed operatives like thousands of glowing insects.

Dominic raised a single hand, signaling Vince to hold. The calculation was complete. One false move would end them all in a blinding flash of automated crossfire, leaving the estate in the hands of ghosts who had already rewritten history.
