Chapter 8 - The Checkmate

The heavy, oppressive silence in the dining room was completely suffocating as Marcus stared down the barrels of five loaded guns.

He looked desperately around the long table, searching for the specific lieutenants he had heavily bribed to support his coup.

"Don't bother looking for your Russian sympathizers, Marcus," Adrian said smoothly, casually setting his wine glass down.

"They were all quietly intercepted and permanently eliminated on their way to the mansion this evening."

Marcus’s face turned the color of pale ash, realizing he was completely, entirely alone and surrounded by heavily armed enemies.

"You have absolutely no proof of these insane allegations, Adrian!" Marcus screamed, his voice cracking with pure, desperate panic.

Adrian calmly reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a thick, heavy manila envelope, tossing it aggressively onto the table.

"I have the offshore banking records proving you stole forty million dollars, which I have completely repossessed, by the way," Adrian listed coldly.

"I have the independent toxicology reports proving you have been lacing my tea with a synthetic neurotoxin for three years."

"And most importantly, I found the encrypted emails you sent to the explosives expert who rigged my wife’s car."

Marcus stared at the envelope, his entire body trembling violently as the absolute reality of his complete destruction set in.

He had arrogantly underestimated the paralyzed man, foolishly believing that a broken body meant a broken mind.

"I did it for the family, Adrian!" Marcus suddenly shouted, completely abandoning his lies in a desperate, pathetic attempt to justify his treason.

"You were going soft! You canceled massive, highly lucrative meetings just to take your kid to feed the damn ducks!"

"You were turning this fierce, ruthless empire into a pathetic joke, and I had to remove the absolute distractions!"

The mention of the ducks—the beautiful, innocent memory of Sophie’s pink crayon list—was the final, fatal trigger.

Adrian moved with blinding, terrifying speed, drawing the massive customized handgun from his thigh holster.

He didn't yell, he didn't curse, and he didn't hesitate for a single, solitary second.

He fired two deafening, explosive shots directly into Marcus Vale’s chest.

The impact violently threw the traitor backward, crashing heavily over his expensive dining chair and onto the polished hardwood floor.

Marcus gasped, choking on his own blood, staring up at the intricate, painted ceiling of the grand dining room.

Adrian wheeled his chair slowly around the table, stopping directly beside the dying, pathetic man who had ruined his life.

"You took my family, Marcus," Adrian whispered coldly, looking down into the terrified, fading eyes of his former friend.

"But you completely failed to realize that I am the devil, and you cannot kill the devil with a few drops of poison."

Marcus let out a final, rattling breath, his eyes going completely glassy and blank as his soul was dragged down to hell.

Adrian holstered his weapon, looking up at his fiercely loyal captains who were standing silently at attention.

"Clean up this mess, and throw his worthless body into the river," Adrian commanded without an ounce of emotion.

"The Moretti family is officially back in business, and anyone who questions my strength will meet the exact same fate."

The king had completely reclaimed his bloody throne, and the massive, suffocating shadow of betrayal was finally lifted from the empire.
