Chapter 10 - Two Cherries

The following spring, the city of New York was blooming with incredibly bright, vibrant colors and warm, gentle breezes.

Adrian ordered his heavily armed security detail to remain at a discreet, entirely invisible distance as he drove his customized, hand-controlled SUV.

Maya sat comfortably in the passenger seat, wearing a beautiful floral sundress and smiling radiantly at her new husband.

In the back seat, Lily was loudly and enthusiastically singing a silly preschool song about a rabbit who had lost his hat.

The massive, terrifying boss of the Moretti crime family was taking the entire day completely off from his incredibly dangerous work.

He had absolutely canceled all of his highly important meetings, completely ignoring the buzzing encrypted phones in his pocket.

He parked the large SUV near a beautiful, sunlit park located right alongside the sparkling Hudson River.

He effortlessly transferred himself into his sleek, highly advanced wheelchair, rolling smoothly along the paved walking path.

They stopped near the edge of the water, pulling bags of safe, healthy seeds from Maya’s large tote bag to feed the ducks.

Lily shrieked with absolute, pure joy every single time a duck waddled incredibly close to her tiny shoes.

She would aggressively demand that Adrian chase the ducks away, only to immediately beg him to bring them back seconds later.

Adrian laughed, a loud, incredibly deep, and genuinely happy sound that completely chased away the remaining ghosts of his dark past.

After the ducks were completely fed, they walked over to a small, cheerful ice cream stand near the park entrance.

"I want a massive chocolate ice cream, please!" Lily demanded politely to the teenager working behind the small counter.

"With two cherries!" she added incredibly specifically, holding up two tiny, sticky fingers.

Adrian smiled, a bittersweet but profoundly beautiful memory washing completely over his healing soul.

"Why two cherries, little bird?" Adrian asked softly, knowing exactly what the incredibly special answer would be.

"Because the good things always go last!" Lily proudly announced, taking a massive, messy bite of the chocolate ice cream.

Maya looked at Adrian, her eyes shining with absolute, unconditional love and deep, profound understanding.

He reached out and securely took Maya’s soft hand, incredibly grateful for the miraculous, beautiful second chance he had been given.

He had completely survived the devastating fire, the dark betrayal, and the freezing, suffocating winter of his paralyzing grief.

He looked at his beautiful, brave daughter happily eating her ice cream in the bright, warm sunshine.
