Chapter 3 - The Unseen Shadows

The profound, unexpected embrace with little Lily Carter completely shifted the dark atmosphere within the Moretti mansion.

Adrian did not fire Maya; instead, he instructed his security team to set up a small, safe play area in the corner of his study.

He found himself looking forward to the days Maya was scheduled to work, secretly craving the innocent, joyful presence of the child.

Lily brought a chaotic, beautiful light into the gloomy fortress, completely unafraid of the heavily armed men in dark suits.

She would color pictures of strange, uneven animals and proudly present them to Adrian, demanding he tape them to his expensive mahogany desk.

He always complied, placing the colorful, messy drawings right next to his massive ledgers of illegal shipping routes and nightclub revenues.

Marcus Vale watched this sudden, miraculous transformation with a careful, calculating gaze that hid his true, sinister intentions.

Marcus had spent the last three years slowly, methodically taking over the daily operations of the Moretti syndicate.

He played the role of the devoted, exhausted lieutenant perfectly, ensuring Adrian remained completely isolated and dependent.

One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Adrian was resting his eyes in his wheelchair while Maya prepared his physical therapy equipment in the adjoining room.

Lily was sitting quietly under Adrian’s desk, hiding with her stuffed rabbit in a makeshift fort made of expensive throw pillows.

The heavy oak doors of the study creaked open, and Marcus walked in carrying a silver tray with Adrian’s afternoon tea and medications.

Adrian kept his eyes closed, listening to the familiar clinking of glass as Marcus set the tray down on the desk above Lily.

Underneath the desk, Lily peeked out from behind her pillow fort, her curious brown eyes watching the tall man in the dark suit.

Marcus did not know the little girl was hiding there, believing he was completely alone in the room with his sleeping boss.

Lily watched in silence as Marcus pulled a tiny, unmarked glass vial from the inner pocket of his suit jacket.

He unscrewed the dropper and carefully squeezed three clear drops of liquid directly into Adrian’s steaming cup of tea.

Marcus quickly pocketed the vial, stirred the tea with a silver spoon, and completely erased any trace of his deadly sabotage.

"Adrian, your tea is getting cold," Marcus said, his voice returning to its usual, friendly, and respectful tone.

Adrian slowly opened his eyes, stretching his stiff shoulders before wheeling himself closer to the desk.

"Thank you, Marcus," Adrian replied, completely unaware of the deadly poison floating in his expensive porcelain cup.

He reached for the tea, bringing the warm cup toward his lips.

Suddenly, a tiny hand shot out from beneath the desk and violently smacked the porcelain cup out of Adrian’s grip.

The hot tea shattered across the polished marble floor, splashing against Marcus’s expensive Italian leather shoes.

"Lily!" Maya gasped, running into the room with a horrified expression as she saw the shattered mess.

"I am so incredibly sorry, Mr. Moretti, she must have been startled!"

Marcus forced a tight, polite smile, though his eyes flashed with a sudden, dangerous fury that only Lily seemed to notice.

"It is perfectly fine, Maya, accidents happen with children," Marcus said smoothly, pulling a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe his shoes.

"I will have the kitchen brew a fresh pot immediately."

Adrian looked down at Lily, who was staring up at him with wide, intensely serious eyes.

She did not look startled, and she did not look sorry.

She looked exactly like a guardian angel who had just deliberately stopped a demon from striking.
