Chapter 5 - Testing the Waters

For the next two weeks, Adrian played the role of the dying, oblivious mafia boss with absolute, Oscar-worthy perfection.
He allowed his shoulders to slump, he spoke in a weaker, hoarser voice, and he complained loudly about his failing health to anyone who would listen.
Marcus watched this fabricated decline with poorly disguised, arrogant satisfaction, fully believing his sinister plan was finally reaching its inevitable conclusion.
"You need to rest, boss," Marcus would say sympathetically, placing the poisoned cup of tea on the mahogany desk.
"I can handle the sit-down with the Russian syndicate tomorrow. You just focus on getting your strength back."
"Thank you, Marcus, I don't know what I would do without you," Adrian would reply, offering a weak, grateful smile.
But the moment Marcus left the room and the heavy oak doors clicked shut, Adrian’s demeanor changed instantly.
He would wheel his chair quickly to the private bathroom attached to his study and pour the poisoned tea directly down the drain.
He completely stopped taking the prescription pills Marcus provided, substituting them with identical, harmless vitamins he had Maya secretly purchase for him.
The results of stopping the poison were absolutely miraculous and terrifyingly swift.
Within exactly four days, the crushing, agonizing brain fog that had plagued Adrian for three years completely lifted.
His mind became razor-sharp again, his thoughts clear, calculating, and exceptionally lethal.
The mysterious muscle spasms in his arms ceased entirely, and his upper body strength returned with a fierce, burning vengeance.
He was still permanently paralyzed from the waist down, but the lion inside him was finally wide awake and hungry for blood.
One afternoon, Adrian called Maya into his study, ensuring the heavy doors were completely locked and the security cameras were disabled.
"Maya, I need you to do something incredibly dangerous for me, and I need you to promise that you will never tell a single soul," Adrian said, his eyes burning with intense urgency.
Maya swallowed hard, instinctively pulling Lily closer to her side.
"What do you need me to do, Mr. Moretti?" she asked, her voice trembling slightly.
Adrian pulled a small, sterilized glass vial from his desk drawer.
"I managed to save a sample of the tea Marcus brought me yesterday before pouring the rest away," Adrian explained, handing her the vial.
"I need you to take this to a private, independent toxicology lab outside of the city."
"Pay them entirely in cash, use a fake name, and demand a completely expedited heavy metals and neurotoxin screening."
Maya took the vial, her hands shaking as the horrifying reality of the situation dawned on her.
"He is poisoning you," Maya whispered in absolute disbelief.
"He has been poisoning me for three years, Maya," Adrian confirmed, his voice as cold as absolute zero.
"And once I have the scientific proof, I am going to completely eradicate him from the face of the earth."
Maya nodded bravely, hiding the glass vial deep inside her purse.
"I will get it done today, Adrian," she promised, turning to leave.
"Maya," Adrian called out softly before she reached the door.
She turned back to look at him.

"Thank you. For everything."
Maya offered a small, determined smile and walked out, carrying the evidence that would finally seal Marcus Vale's bloody fate.
