Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Machine

The independent toxicology report arrived three days later, entirely confirming Adrian’s darkest, most violent suspicions.

The tea was heavily laced with a rare, synthetic neurotoxin specifically designed to mimic the symptoms of severe neurological decline.

It was a slow-acting, untraceable poison that would eventually lead to a massive, fatal heart attack, making it look like a tragic medical complication.

Adrian sat in his dark study, staring at the printed lab results illuminated only by the glow of his desk lamp.

He now had the absolute, undeniable proof of Marcus’s betrayal, but killing him outright was simply not enough.

Adrian wanted to completely dismantle everything Marcus had built, to strip him of his power, his wealth, and his pathetic, stolen dignity.

Over the next few weeks, Adrian transformed into an invisible ghost within his own digital empire.

Using a secure, encrypted laptop that Marcus did not know existed, Adrian began quietly auditing the syndicate's massive financial accounts.

What he found was a staggering, highly complex web of embezzlement and blatant treason.

Marcus had been systematically siphoning millions of dollars from the construction firms and shipping routes into private, offshore shell companies.

Worse yet, Marcus had been actively selling Adrian’s highly guarded trade secrets and protection routes to the rival Russian cartel.

He was intentionally weakening the Moretti family's defenses, preparing to seamlessly hand the empire over to the Russians the moment Adrian died.

"You arrogant, incredibly stupid bastard," Adrian muttered to himself, his fingers flying rapidly across the glowing keyboard.

Adrian did not simply freeze the stolen offshore accounts; he aggressively hacked into them and redirected every single stolen penny back into hidden trusts under Lily’s name.

He systematically severed Marcus’s digital access to the syndicate’s primary armories, completely locking the traitor out of the family's weapon supplies.

He quietly reached out to his most fiercely loyal, old-school captains—the men who had served his father and absolutely despised Marcus’s new, arrogant leadership.

He summoned them to a secret, heavily guarded meeting in the basement of one of his oldest, abandoned warehouses.

When Adrian wheeled himself into the dark warehouse, the five loyal captains stood up in absolute, stunned silence.

They had been told for three years that their boss was a dying, incapacitated invalid.

Instead, they saw a man whose eyes burned with the brilliant, terrifying fire of a king ready for war.

"Marcus Vale orchestrated the bombing that killed my wife and daughter," Adrian announced, his voice echoing violently through the empty warehouse.

"He has been poisoning me, stealing our money, and selling our city to the Russians."

The captains erupted in furious, bloodthirsty outrage, drawing their weapons and screaming for immediate vengeance.

Adrian raised his hand, instantly demanding and receiving absolute, total silence.

"Marcus thinks he is untouchable, and he believes he is going to officially take over the entire family tomorrow night at the annual dinner," Adrian stated coldly.

"We are going to let him believe he has won."

"And then, we are going to trap the rat in a cage he built himself."

The trap was completely, perfectly set, and the executioner was finally ready to swing the heavy blade.
