Chapter 2 - The Girl with the Rabbit

Three grueling years had passed since the explosion, and Adrian’s mansion had become a silent, echoing tomb of dark marble and armed guards.

He sat behind his massive mahogany desk, staring blankly at the extensive financial reports Marcus had placed in front of him that morning.

His legs were hidden beneath a thick, expensive wool blanket, a constant, humiliating reminder of the power that had been violently stolen from him.

A gentle knock echoed through the vast, empty study, breaking the heavy, suffocating silence of the room.

"Enter," Adrian commanded, his voice as cold and sharp as a freshly sharpened blade.

The heavy oak doors swung open, revealing his newly hired physical therapist, a quiet, diligent woman named Maya Carter.

Maya was a widow who worked tirelessly to support her child, and she was one of the few people who did not tremble in Adrian’s presence.

But today, Maya was not alone.

Hiding shyly behind Maya’s long skirt was a tiny girl with big, curious brown eyes and messy pigtails.

The child was clutching a ragged, threadbare stuffed rabbit by one floppy ear, dragging it across the polished marble floor.

"Mr. Moretti, I am so incredibly sorry," Maya apologized quickly, her cheeks flushing with genuine embarrassment.

"My babysitter canceled at the very last minute, and I had absolutely no one else to watch Lily today."

Adrian stared at the little girl, a sudden, agonizing phantom pain twisting violently in his hollow chest.

Lily was three years old, almost the exact same age Sophie had been when her life was brutally stolen.

"Keep her completely out of my way, Maya," Adrian ordered coldly, looking back down at his paperwork.

"I am paying you to manage my physical therapy, not to run a daycare center in my home."

"She will be perfectly quiet, sir, I promise," Maya said, guiding Lily to a large leather armchair in the corner of the room.

"Sit here, sweetie, and play with your rabbit while Mommy works."

Maya approached Adrian’s wheelchair and began the agonizing, daily routine of stretching his atrophied leg muscles to prevent blood clots.

The room remained perfectly silent for twenty minutes, save for the soft rustling of Adrian’s paperwork and Maya’s focused breathing.

Then, Adrian felt a tiny, unexpected weight pressing against the metal footrest of his wheelchair.

He slowly lowered his financial report and looked down.

Lily was standing directly between the large, rubber wheels of his chair, staring up at him with absolute, fearless innocence.

"Can you be my daughter for one day?" the little girl asked, her sweet voice breaking the heavy silence of the room.

Maya gasped in absolute horror, dropping Adrian’s leg and rushing forward to grab her child.

"Lily, no, you cannot bother Mr. Moretti!" Maya scolded, her eyes wide with terror as she prepared to be fired immediately.

Adrian raised his hand, a silent, absolute command that stopped Maya completely dead in her tracks.

He looked down at the tiny girl, his cold, dead heart suddenly skipping a painful, erratic beat.

Lily did not look away, her big brown eyes reflecting a pure, unadulterated hope that Adrian had not seen in three long years.

Before he could formulate a harsh rejection, Lily climbed clumsily onto the footrest and pulled herself up into his lap.

She wrapped her small, warm arms tightly around his neck and rested her cheek against his expensive suit jacket.

"Okay," Lily whispered softly into his collar.

"But I don’t want to be your daughter for only one day."

Adrian turned his face away, staring blindly out the large glass window at the gray, overcast sky.

His broad shoulders trembled once.

Then they trembled again, shaking violently as the impenetrable dam holding back three years of agonizing grief finally shattered.

The most feared, ruthless crime boss in New York was crying, sobbing silently into the tangled hair of a fearless little girl.

He held her tightly against his chest, finally allowing himself to mourn the beautiful, perfect life that had been brutally ripped away from him.
