Chapter 11 - The Phantom Threat

The profound peace that had settled over the Moretti estate was an incredibly fragile illusion, shattered on a Tuesday morning.
Adrian was sitting in his sunlit study, reviewing legitimate real estate contracts, when Maya suddenly rushed into the room.
Her beautiful face was entirely drained of color, her hands trembling violently as she held a small, black envelope.
"Adrian, I found this resting directly on Lily’s pillow when I went to make her bed," Maya choked out in absolute terror.
Adrian felt a cold, paralyzing dread completely wash over his body as he wheeled himself forward to take the envelope.
The thick, luxurious paper bore no postage stamp, meaning someone had physically bypassed his incredibly expensive security system to place it there.
He tore the envelope open with terrifying speed, pulling out a single, glossy photograph that made his blood run completely cold.
It was a picture of Marcus Vale, taken years ago, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with a massive, heavily scarred Russian man.
Written in dark, crimson ink across the back of the photograph was a single, devastating sentence: Blood demands blood.
"Who is that man with Marcus?" Maya whispered, her voice shaking with absolute panic.
"His name is Viktor Volkov, the absolute apex predator of the Russian syndicate," Adrian replied, his jaw clenched in pure fury.
"He is the man I forced into a permanent peace treaty after I executed Marcus."
Adrian slammed his fist violently against his mahogany desk, the sudden noise completely startling the guards outside his door.
He had foolishly believed the Russians were entirely terrified into submission, but this photograph proved a horrifying new reality.
Viktor had not surrendered out of absolute fear; he had surrendered to buy himself enough time to plot the perfect, devastating revenge.
"How did they get into our house, Adrian?" Maya cried, frantically looking toward the hallway where Lily was supposed to be playing.
"We have a traitor, Maya, and the disease of betrayal has apparently not been entirely cured," Adrian stated with lethal calm.
He reached for the heavily encrypted red phone sitting on his desk, a device he had not used in over a year.
He was completely done playing the role of the peaceful, legitimate businessman.
The terrifying, absolute monster that the criminal underworld feared was officially being violently resurrected.
Adrian dialed his head of security, his dark eyes burning with an unholy, completely destructive rage.

"Lock down the entire estate, shoot anyone who approaches the perimeter, and bring me every single guard who was on the night shift," Adrian commanded.
The war that he thought he had won was only just beginning.
