Chapter 30 - THE QUEEN'S CHECKMATE

Before Yuri's blade could slash within an inch of her coat, Evelyn pivoted on her heel, using her momentum and training to deflect his arm. With a brutal, calculated strike, she drove her elbow straight into his solar plexus, knocking the wind from his lungs with a sharp gasp.
Yuri stumbled back, clutching his chest, his face contorting in pain and fury. He lunged again, desperate and reckless. Evelyn ducked beneath his wild swing, swept his legs out from under him with a textbook martial arts low kick, and slammed him hard onto the concrete floor.
Before he could recover, Evelyn knelt, pressing her knee firmly into his chest and pinning his arm behind his back while pressing her pistol barrel firmly against his jawline.
"You lost, Yuri," Evelyn breathed, her voice dripping with absolute ice.
At that exact moment, heavy footsteps echoed down the concrete stairs as Lorenzo, Marco, and the enforcers flooded the sub-basement, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter in seconds.
Lorenzo walked over, looking down at the pinned Russian envoy, then up at Evelyn with an expression of profound, awe-struck admiration. He offered his hand to help her up.
Evelyn stood, straightening her jacket, breathing evenly as if she had just stepped out of a boardroom meeting rather than a hand-to-hand brawl. She looked down at Yuri.
"Tell Viktor Kravchenko," Evelyn said softly, her voice echoing off the concrete walls, "that the next time he tries to touch my city, I won't just stop his ships. I'll take his entire operation apart from the seabed up. Now, get him out of my sight. Hand him over to federal custody with full documentation of his domestic terrorism charges. Let the DOJ handle what's left of him."

Marco hauled the bruised and battered Yuri to his feet, dragging him away toward the elevators.
