Chapter 13 - BLOOD IN THE LEDGERS

Retaliation was swift and bloody. Three days after the fire at Pier 39, the Calabrese family struck back, but they didn't aim for Evelyn. They aimed for the crown. Lorenzo’s armored SUV was ambushed on Lake Shore Drive. The news hit the bunker like a seismic shockwave. Evelyn was deep in the financial ledgers when Marco burst through the doors, his face pale, his suit covered in dust and blood.
"Lorenzo," Marco gasped. "RPG hit the convoy. He's alive, but it's bad, Evelyn. It's real bad."
The world tilted on its axis. The cold, calculated boss vanished, replaced for a fraction of a second by a woman terrified of losing the man who had pulled her from the wreckage of her old life. But panic was a luxury she couldn't afford. Evelyn slammed the ledger shut.
They rushed to the underground clinic beneath the Moretti stronghold. Lorenzo was on an operating table, a team of mob doctors working frantically to stop the bleeding from a shrapnel wound in his side. He was conscious, his face slick with sweat, but his eyes locked onto Evelyn the moment she entered the room.
"Evelyn," he rasped, his voice strained.
She rushed to his side, taking his blood-stained hand in hers. "I'm here. You're going to be fine, Lorenzo. You hear me? You don't get to die on me."
"It wasn't... just a hit," Lorenzo coughed, gripping her hand weakly. "They knew my route. Only three people knew that route, Evie. We have a mole. A rat in the house."

Evelyn’s sorrow instantly transmuted into a white-hot, blinding rage. Someone in their inner circle had sold him out. She kissed his forehead, a tender gesture that starkly contrasted with the lethal promise in her eyes. "Rest. I will find them. I will tear this city apart until I find them."
