Chapter 29 - THE LASALLE STREET SHOWDOWN

The abandoned Federal Reserve annex on LaSalle Street was pitch black inside, smelling of damp concrete and ozone. Evelyn moved through the cavernous marble lobby with the silent, lethal grace of a ghost, her boots making no sound against the tiled floor. Her pistol was raised, the tactical flashlight mounted beneath the barrel cutting a sharp beam through the dancing dust motes.
She reached the subterranean sub-basement where the primary municipal switchboard hummed with dozens of server towers glowing an angry red.
Standing before the central console, frantically typing commands to override the cargo ship's navigation system, was a solitary figure in a dark trench coat—Yuri Rostov.
"You're persistent, I'll give you that, Mrs. Moretti," Yuri said without turning around, his fingers still hammering away at the keyboard. "Too bad your little digital parlor tricks won't stop the St. Petersburg. In three minutes, that freighter will ram straight into Navy Pier, and your pristine empire will crumble under the weight of a municipal catastrophe."
Evelyn stepped out from the shadows, her pistol locked firmly on the center of his back. "Turn around, Yuri. Hands where I can see them."
Yuri slowly turned, a cynical smirk playing on his lips. He didn't raise his hands. Instead, he casually tapped the enter key on the console with his pinky finger. "You're too late, Evelyn. The command is encrypted and locked. Even if you shoot me, the ship doesn't stop."
Evelyn didn't flinch. She didn't panic. She stepped closer, her eyes narrowing as she assessed the hardware setup. She noticed an independent physical override switch—a heavy industrial toggle wired directly to the analog backup lines installed during the Cold War.
With blinding speed, Evelyn holstered her pistol, lunged past Yuri, and slammed her entire weight onto the analog toggle switch.
A loud, metallic CLACK echoed through the sub-basement.
On the monitors overhead, the red warning lights instantly flickered, turned yellow, and then shifted to a steady, peaceful green. Across the city harbor, the cargo ship's emergency diesel brakes roared to life, churning the dark waters of Lake Michigan as the massive vessel ground to a dead stop two hundred yards short of Navy Pier.

Yuri’s smile vanished completely. He lunged for Evelyn, drawing a concealed switchblade from his sleeve.
