Chapter 17 - FIRE ON THE RIVER

Evelyn’s instincts were right. While Don Antonio sipped champagne at the gala, a massive, coordinated strike was hitting Moretti strongholds across the South Side. Explosions rocked the Chicago River as Calabrese hit squads targeted their armories and safe houses.
Evelyn and Lorenzo tore out of the gala, abandoning the pretense of high society. In the back of their armored SUV, Lorenzo gripped his side, the pain of his recent injury flaring up, but his eyes were wide awake with wartime clarity.
"They hit the riverfront," Lorenzo growled, looking at the tablet displaying their security feeds. "They're trying to cut us in half, isolate the north from the south."
"We pull everyone back to the Loop," Evelyn commanded, her tactical mind racing. "Let them take the riverfront. Let them stretch their lines thin."
"Give up territory?" Marco asked from the front seat, bewildered.
"We're not giving it up, Marco. We're funneling them," Evelyn said, her eyes cold and calculating. "They think we're going to fight a defensive war. But they forgot what I manage."
Evelyn pulled up the logistics grid. She controlled every freight train, every cargo truck, and every drawbridge in the city. "Raise the bridges. Trap their strike teams on the island. Then, send the armored freight cars down the central line. We box them in. We don't fight them on the streets. We crush them in the infrastructure."

Lorenzo looked at her, entirely in awe. He pulled her close, kissing her deeply, the smell of gunpowder and expensive perfume mixing in the air. "You are a terrifying woman, Evelyn Carter."
